Amrita was born to a Sikh family. Amrita made her Bollywood debut in 1983 with Betaab, a vastly successful film. As well as playing leading roles, she also played supporting negative roles in films such as Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Aaina. She also won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the latter. These successes did not dissuade her from her resolve to retire into family life and Amrita quit acting after 1993. In 1991, Amrita married to actor Saif Ali Khan in an Islamic wedding ceremony and got converted to Islam before marriage. Saif is 12 years younger to her. After thirteen years of marriage, they got divorced.
This actress was recognized for strong maternal roles in Hindi films. However, tired of monotonous roles, she exited acting in 2006 after a 26-year career.
