Joaquin Phoenix (formerly Leaf Phoenix) gained recognition with his portrayal of Commodus in the historical epic, Gladiator (2000), receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, as well as nominations for the Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild, Satellite Award and BAFTA Award. His recognition further increased with him playing the character of musician Johnny Cash in a biographical film, Walk the Line (2005).
