SHABANA AZMI

Biography : Sayyida Shaban Azmi is a well-known film and theatre personality as well as a social activist. She is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Her father Kaifi Azmi was a poet and mother Shaukat Azmi is an actor. Her brother Baba Azmi is cinematographer. Her debut film was Shyam Benegal’s Ankur. She became established as an actor of parallel cinema. Her films include Arth, Khandhar, Paar, Nishaant, Shatranj ke khiladi, Sparsh and Sati. Her commercial movies include Amar Akbar Anthony and Parvarish. Her international ventures include Madame Sousafza and City of Joy. Her theatre performances include Safed Kundli and Tumhari Amrita. She made her small screen debut with a soap opera called Anupama. She is married to scriptwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar. She actively promotes AIDS awareness and has been nominated to Rajya Sabha too.
