Smita Patil is one of the finest actresses that the Indian film industry has seen. She not only acted in a slew of successful parallel movies (both Hindi and Marathi) but was actively involved in theatre as well. After passing out from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), she made her Hindi film debut with Shyam Benegal’s Charandas Chor. Subsequently, she worked with some of the best Indian directors including Satyajit Ray, Govind Nihalani and Mrinal Sen. Her most notable roles were in Manthan (1977), Bhumika (1977),Aakrosh (1980), Chakra (1981), Chidambaram (1985) and Mirch Masala (1985). Her performance in the movie Bhumika won her the National Award for Best Actress. She received another National Film Award and a Filmfare Award. She was also the recipient of the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour in 1985. She was married to Raj Babbar. She was also an activist and was always a champion for women empowerment.
