Women’s Day special: Shahrukh Khan to perform lungi dance for Rajinikanth’s daughter

King Khan has agreed to be a part of the music launch of the South superstar's next film that releases this April

The celebrations for International Women’s Day have kicked off in style with the news that Shahrukh Khan will perform live at the music launch of Soundarya Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiiyaan in Chennai. Though the film’s music is composed by AR Rahman rather than the Chennai Express superhit song’s Yo Yo Honey Singh, we think it is an apt method for King Khan to celebrate the day. It is a sign of the recent explosion in powerful roles for women in Bollywood rather than being mere eye and arm candy that 2014 has already seen a slew of releases where the female of the species is in the ascendant rather than the male. The year has already witnessed the magic of Alia Bhatt is Highway, Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi in Dedh Ishqiya and Parineeti Chopra in Hasee Toh Phasee. And current release Queen features a career best performance by Kangana Ranaut while old adversaries Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla’s face-off in Gulaab Gang comes a matter of weeks after the powerful documentary Gulabi Gang. And there is more to come with Kangana’s incandescent performance in the explosive Revolver Rani where Vir Das is reduced to being a toy boy, and later on in the year we will see Vidya Balan in India’s first female detective movie Bobby Jasoos.

In London, the celebrations for International Women’s Day will kick off on March 10 with an photographic exhibition on South Asian women at the School of Oriental and African Studies. This will be followed by a 20th anniversary screening of Gurinder Chadha’s path-breaking women empowerment film Bhaji On The Beach. Post screening, Chadha and writer and actress Meera Syal will participate in a panel discussion with investigative journalist Radha Bedi. It is a ticketed event and all proceeds from this event will be donated to Oxfam Projects in India to End Violence Against Women.

It is heartening, yet sad that a bunch of people in faraway London are committed to eradicate violence against Indian women while in India, the nation remains in thrall to the daily circus that is the lead up to the greatest show on earth – the general elections. This attention will soon be diluted when the second greatest show on earth – the IPL – begins in April. We are a country that likes its grand theatre and thus the twin tamashas of the elections and IPL will jostle for centre stage with Bollywood. At least Bollywood celebrates women these days but the lot of the fairer sex in real life remains sad.
