Rajkummar Rao is one of the most talented actors in not just India but the world. After doing various characters in varied genres it is difficult to believe that even Rajkummar Rao can be rejected for a role he wishes to do. But shockingly that happened. Few weeks ago when I had caught up with him to chat about the success of his recent films and his characters, I asked him if he had ever done something ridiculously funny to get a role in a film. He revealed that there was one role which he indeed wanted to do and even auditioned for but was not selected for it. In a BollywoodLife exclusive he revealed,
"Not funny but ya, I auditioned for Victoria and Abdul which Ali Fazal is doing and I think it’s a great script. So that is something which I really wanted to do and I auditioned for it but ya, for whatever reason filmmakers thought that probably I didn’t fit the part."
As I mentioned above, it is indeed shocking to know that even an actor of such stature won't be selected for a role but that happened. What is also applaudable is his sheer honesty about it. In an industry which thrives on show off and usually work under a garb, Rajkummar Rao came out and revealed about auditioning for a role and losing the part to Ali Fazal. Victoria & Abdul is based on the novel by Shrabani Basu. It is about Abdul Karim, a boy from Jhansi who became a personal servant of the Empress of India and went on to become the Indian secretary. He taught Urdu to the Queen and enlightened her about Islam. They shared a close relationship that created a stir in the royal court.
The film stars Academy award winning actress Dame Judi Dench and Ali Fazal in the lead role. It saw its international release on October 6, 2017 and is slated for an October 13, 2017 release in India. Also read: Rajkummar Rao: Sleeping with someone won't get you work - Watch exclusive video
