Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is the latest film that is getting the love from audience and critics alike. The Kushan Nandy directed film has been declared a hit by trade analysts, despite it competing with several other films. An achievement that has been rare in the lull of 2017. But the road to glory was far from easy for Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, which features Nawazuddin Siddiui in the titular role. It had to face the unnecessary, sanskaari wrath of Pahlaj Nihalani, now the ex-CBFC chairperson, for he demanded 48 cuts on the film after giving it an A certificate. The movie was later cleared by Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), and the rest...we wish it was history. While Kushan is "very happy and in a positive frame of mind", Pahlaj has creeped up on him and has sent a legal notice to the team of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, including the producers.
"I haven't read the notice. It is sad that he is trying to cash in on controversy," says Kushan. He also adds that it was not his fault that he could not read the notice, as Pahlaj went to the press immediately, before giving him a chance to even go through it.
Kushan and the Babumoshai Bandookbaaz team had alleged that Pahlaj tried to 'sabotage' their film, which has been the reputation of the ex-CBFC chief. They sent him a legal notice seeking an apology, in reply of which they received a legal notice, that lasts 18 pages. Kushan, who has "nothing to do with Pahlaj anymore" was ready to talk about the whole feud for one more time. The talented director shed light on the ploys that Pahlaj pulled in order to get his film chopped off heavily. He describes the everything that Pahlaj did in chilling details...
"He wrote a letter to FCAT, while we were fighting the battle. He wrote two things in the letter; one was that he told FCAT 'Please don't allow the film to do voluntary cuts'. And second, which was the most grievous thing he said, that I showed him a different cut of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz and a different one to FCAT. The first point was clarified by FCAT themselves. They told Nihalani that you are no person to tell us what to do or what not to do. The second part was a completely blatant lie. So, we went to Scrabble which is the company that had made the DCP (Digital Cinema Package is a collection of digital files used to store and convey digital cinema), which can only be played with a password. They wrote a letter to FCAT saying that both the places played the same DCP and since we provided the password, we know it was the same. But fact remains that Mr Nihalani made an attempt to sabotage the film and he also confirmed it on a news channel. When someone writes to a body that you are being shown a different film, so it was like a huge jolt to us, which is why sent the legal notice to him. Now that the film is being talked about, comes a letter from him, which is being publicised even before it could reach me, I find it amazing. He used to say that director's cash in on controversy with CBFC, now he is the one cashing in on the same."
"My lawyer will take care of the legal notice sent by him," Kushan added.
"I don't know him. I don't want to know him. Whatever is to be done legally will be done by my lawyer. I am in a positive frame of mind. I want to move on in life" Kushan concluded.
Will he be able to move on peacefully, now that Pahlaj is on to him? Well, let us see how the latest feud in B-town plays out.
