Kartik Aaryan has turned into the heartthrob of the nation with his last three films, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Love Aaj Kal and Pati Patni Aur Woh. Not only has his fan-following soared immensely post their critical and commercial acclaim, but he's also finally got his recognition both as a bankable star and talented actor after considerable struggle. However, he's gained fame and success thus far with the comedy genre, and in an industry notorious for typecasting, which inevitable also rubs off onto audience perception, a question mark hovers around whether the actor can perform as well and replicate similar success in other genres, too.
Not many recollect how good Kartik Aaryan was in a little-known-touching film called Akaash Vani, which had released straight after Pyaar Ka Punchnama, and had somewhere got lost amidst the melee of bigger films. So, Love Aaj Kal, in many ways, is going to be his acid test both as an actor and star. Naturally, the question did pop up when we recently caught up with Kartik for an exclusive interview.
"Of course, this (Love Aaj Kal) is something really out of my comfort zone and I'm looking forward to the result. It's been challenging playing these two characters, Veer and Raghu (he has a dual role), and it's been a learning process all through the film. I feel when you do things out of your comfort zone, it's always a litmus test, always an acid test. Love Aaj Kal is going to be the biggest test in my career and am really excited about it. I'm nervous as well, but am looking forward to how the audience would react to watching me like this and not doing the usual the comedy or humorous stuff — playing a romantic character or someone with so much intensity, being a part of an Imtiaz-Ali world.
"Till now, there has been a great response, we're mere days away from the release, and I'm so looking forward to it. It's been challenging it, but as an actor you need to have those challenges to keep you going. Experimentation gives you a lot as an actor and this film has given me a lot. Even more than an acid test, I've already got so much of experience, so much of learning from Imtiaz sir that I've taken a lot from Love Aaj Kal. So, I think I've already got what I wanted, now it's in the hands of the audience to go the theatres and watch it, and...the more, the merrier."

Those few who've seen Akaash Vani know how versatile Kartik Aaryan really is — a versatility he had also admirably displayed during the emotional moments in SKTKS. So, fingers crossed that Kartik passes his acid test with flying colours. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Love Aaj Kal also stars Sara Ali Khan and will hit screens on Valentine's Day, 14th February.
