Exclusive: Abhirami set to make a comeback in Tamil cinema with 36 Vayadhinile

The pretty actress had taken time off from films to pursue degree in psychology

This actress is perhaps most recognised in Tamil cinema for her role in Virumaandi opposite Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan. Abhirami is now making her comeback on screen in Tamil cinema with Jyothika’s 36 Vayadhinile, a much-awaited film.

Abhirami made her debut at the age of 13 in acclaimed filmmaker Adoor Golpalakrishnan’s Kathapurushan. Though she went on to do numerous films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, Abhirami moved out of the film industry in 2004 to pursue her higher education in the United States. She then tied the knot in 2009 with Rahul Pavanan (grandson of renowned writer Pavanan)., Abhirami is back in the south film industry after her long hiatus and she talks exclusively to Bollywoodlife about films and her career.

You've taken a sabbatical from acting in Kollywood. What have you been upto?

I was away in the US studying. I did my degree in psychology and was working as the marketing head of an MNC for about six years.

Do you find the film industry different than what it was?

Yes. Very much. Now there are lots of new film-makers, non-formulaic stories, lots of new technology, etc.

Are you planning to come back to films?

The "come back" happened about a year ago actually. I have had one release in Malayalam already (Apothecary) and another slated for release in the next couple of months (Driver on Duty). Another film in Tamil is releasing in May - 36 Vayathinile.

Any films you saw recently that you liked?

Lots! In Tamil, I liked Goli Soda and Mariyaan. In Malayalam, Bangalore Days, Left Right Left, Ozhimuri and Melvilasom. In Hindi, I liked English Vinglish, NH10 and Queen. I am sure I'm missing plenty from this list…

What kind of roles would you like to do now?

Fun roles. Characters that excite me. I’d like to do characters that make me think and evoke some kind of emotion in me. Anger, laughter, sympathy.... whatever may it be. I want to play a character with a purpose - not be a wallflower.
