We had recently met Deepika Padukone, who had exclusively told us that she had only come aboard '83 — headed by her husband, Ranveer Singh, in the role of Kapil Dev — after hearing the script because it was important for her to show the contribution of Romi Dev (Kapil's wife), the contribution of family toward the success of a sportsperson (the support of her family toward the mercurial success of her father and ace badminton player, Prakash Padukone, no doubt being a huge influence). The length of her role (the actress confirmed it to us that she had an extended guest appearance in the movie) not being holding any relevance toward her decision whatsoever.
Basically, Ranveer Singh was the only actor on board when the project was announced, after which the rest of the cast, including the likes of Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna were added to the ensemble cast. Deepika Padukone was one of the last actors to join the film, her part, never a foregone conclusion for Director Kabir Khan while penning the script, especially given the presence of Ranveer Singh in it. Recently, when BollywoodLife sat down for an exclusive interview with Kabir during the promotion of his upcoming, web series, The Forgotten Army, Deepika's casting for '83 was one of the subjects that cropped up. Here's what the ace Director had to say...
"I think the background, the fact that her dad, Prakash Padukone was a sports superstar, that influenced her very strongly. It wasn't because Deepika had agreed to do the film that I wrote the role. Deepika liked the role, and that's why she agreed to do the film. We never initially intended it that way (Deepika being a part of the film), and as Deepika said, there's a certain support role that the family plays, and I wanted to capture that, which is why I wrote the character of Romi, and when I narrated it to Deepika, I knew it was a small role. So, I said to Deepika, 'Just listen to the film. If you like it, you'll come on board, if not, you won't come on board. She heard the film, and she knew it was about the team and the boys and Kapil. But, she just loved the script and so, she came on board.
"Initially, we had only cast Ranveer Singh, and then we had cast about 15 actors after that, with Deepika part of that process. We had only locked Ranveer, then announced the film, then the process of casting everyone else began, where we auditioned hundreds of boys. A pitch was made in casting director Mukesh Chhabra's office. We used to first tell them to show their cricketing skills because unless they had a certain athletic body language, there was no point of casting them."
Well, it's nice that Deepika Padukone joined husband Ranveer Singh only because she felt it was necessary for her to do the film. Anyway, regardless how they came together, we're just glad that the superhit real-life couple will be entertaining us again on screen.
