The two young people hooked up during the making of their first film, Tujhe Meri Kasam. Eight years later, they will get booked (read: married) just before the release of their second film together, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya. At the promotions of the romcom, we get them to spill the beans on the movie and matters of the heart
Genelia D’Souza, unlike the bubbly characters she plays onscreen, is restrained when it comes to talking about love. Meanwhile, her beau Riteish Deshmukh, who for years maintained a ‘good friend’ stance about the relationship, is for a change more than happy to talk about it now. But we begin with the reason for our meeting: a chat about their soon-to-release romantic comedy Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya
On the film
Apart from being another ghazab kahani from the makers of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya looks identical to Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met. While it retains the madness of the Ajab Prem, it has the North Indian appeal of Jab We Met. Genelia says, “Of course, it’s the same genre as JWM, so they look alike, but there is no similarity. I also hope it’s as big as that film was.” Love stories with real life couples haven’t always done well at the box-office. Riteish isn’t perturbed by that, and says, “I feel that if a film is good, then it will work. Actors, couple, chemistry and all that are as good as the film. Whether a real life couple work or not are all permutations and combinations.” Genelia adds, “I always believe in chemistry being written. Of course, physically they have to look good together also. I don’t have any apprehensions about us, because I never knew Riteish as an actor. We have never visited each other on the sets. I honestly discovered him as an actor during the shoots. I was very confident of us being in each other’s space. And in the promos, people have found freshness about our pairing despite us being around for ten years.”
In these ten years, how much growth have they noticed in each other as actors? “We were two kids discovering life when we started out. Everything for us was novelty,” says Genelia. “I have seen him come up with funny lines at the awards shows all the time, but now I know it’s a talent. He would come up with lines on the set and changed scenes in no time. Also, he is one of the most selfless actors who will let you be the heart of the scene - not every actor lets you do that.” Riteish says, “She’s a different person and I think that’s the wonderful part. Knowing someone personally inside out doesn’t mean I knew everything. Like I know how she would react to a certain thing, but she would do something totally different. She always kept me on my toes. She kicks my ass!”
On their relationship
In times when every breath and step stars take are keenly watched, the Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya couple successfully managed to hide their love affair for all these years. To which the 33-year-old actor laughs, “I am a very good liar. I kept on saying 'We are just friends'.” However, now that the truth about the relationship is out in the open, they seem comfortable spilling the beans about them as a couple. Ask about the one thing they adore about each other and after a long pause Genelia comes up with, “I always tell Riteish that for starters he is a charmer. He has this gift of charming people which I enjoy, because I feel lucky. Another thing is the fact that he treats women so well.” Ritiesh explains, “The one thing out of the many I like about her is her smile and her energy. She is absolutely vibrant. As an actor also, she has an immense amount of energy in her.”
In the romcom, Riteish plays a shy guy, whereas Genelia is the naughty one who makes him dance to her tunes and wears the pants in the relationship. When asked if it’s similar in real life too, Riteish in his usual light-hearted manner says, “We wear shorts. Both of us prefer wearing shorts.” However, Genelia is more forthcoming. “None of us dominate. I think both of us are individuals in a relationship and we have never lost our individuality. I am extremely independent. But whenever Riteish is around, I get a little more dependent on him. So I am more of the kid in the relationship and look up to him a lot.” And she quickly adds, “However, unlike the film, he makes me dance. But I got my chance in the film.”
