24 years...what a great journey!
On June 25 2016 that is today, Shah Rukh Khan will be celebrating 24 years of ruling Bollywood.
Shah Rukh Khan, whose official debut is always believed to be Deewana, had actually made his movie debut with Arundhati Roy's TV movie In Which Annie Gives It To Those Ones. Then there was also Mani Kaul's Idiot, where he had a negative role, before zooming into our hearts on a bike in Deewana. His roles in Aziz Mirza's Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa were also much appreciated. He won his first major award (Filmfare Best Actor award) for Baazigar, where he had glamorized the concept of negative role. He could also be the first mainstream hero to win the Best Actor in a Negative Role for his performance in Anjaam. He became every lady's dream man in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, a role he continued successfully with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. When you thought he was getting typecast, he did Swades and Chak De India. His Chennai Express is one of the highest grossers of all time!
Though his FAN took a little beating, we are sure he will bounce back mightily with his upcoming Raees and his films with Gauri Shinde, Aanand L Rai, Imtiaz Ali and Aditya Chopra.
If you cast SRK in your film, one thing you can be sure is that he will share a charming equation with his co-stars. As he celebrates 24 years of his journey in Bollywood, let's look at 23 co-stars of his with whom he shared the best chemistry.
Let's look at those actors with whom King Khan shares near-natural to completely natural camaraderie...
Films: Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name is Khan, Dilwale
The best chemistry SRK shared with any co-star ever...and the only reason I bore Rohit Shetty's Dilwale!
Film: Kal Ho Naa Ho
Though they have appeared in only one film, they shared such a cool bromance that they were hired as the hosting duo for every film award function.
Films: Karan Arjun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam
They may have a blow-hot-blow-cold relationship now, but no one can deny they had some sparkling moments with each other in every movie they acted together. Unfortunately, I don't believe we would see that again in the near future...even though they have patched up...
Films: Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Darr, Duplicate, Yes Boss, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, One 2 Ka Four, Paheli
After Kajol, Juhi Chawla is the best heroine SRK had. No arguments please!
Films: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Chalte Chalte, Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna, Paheli, Veer Zaara
Maybe it's in the blood, but even Kajol's cousin had a sizzling chemistry with SRK even when they were not paired with each other as in Veer-Zaara.
Films: Om Shanti Om, Billu, Chennai Express, Happy New Year
In the newer breed, there is an undeniable equation SRK has with Deepika who made her debut opposite the actor. Except for Billu (where she had a cameo), every other film has turned out to be a blockbuster!
Films: Don, Don 2, Ra.One, Billu
Though they haven't exactly been paired in a fully romantic way, whenever they came together in the Farhan Akhtar flicks, we couldn't take our eyes off the screen!
Films: Dil Aashna Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Duplicate, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...
Whether she played his mother, mother-in-law or aaya, SRK had an easygoing camaraderie with Bollywood's most affable mom!
Films: Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Yes Boss
Some of the finest moments in KHNH was those with SRK and Reema Lagoo, so great was their mother-son bond...
Films: Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna, Paheli, Bhoothnath and Bhoothnath Returns
Both are great actors of their time, and when they come together, you expect nothing but a dhamaka! It's their explosive dynamics in Mohabbatein and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham that elevated their somewhat melodramatic scripts!
Film: Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Even though they shared a very few scenes together, the park bench scene in K3G is undoubtedly one of the best emotional scenes in both their careers!
Films: Darr, DDLJ, Chaahat, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Veer-Zaara, Paheli, Hey Babyy, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Happy New Year
Seeing their chemistry in DDLJ, sometimes even we wisher if our fathers were that cool...
Though Dilwale might not be upto everyone's taste, people still have some positive to look forward to, especially SRK and Varun's bromance!
Films: Dil Se, Kaal, Om Shanti Om
Though she never appeared as his heroine, their coming together for the first time resulted in one of the most iconic songs of all time - Chaiyya Chaiyya!
Films: Josh, Mohabbatein, Devdas, Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam
It was a freak incident that made them drift apart (...Come on everyone knows the Salman-Ash-SRK fracas that happened at the Chalte Chalte shoot, after which she was replaced with Rani!), but till then, they made a really nice pair. Even as siblings in Josh...
Films: Anjaam, Koyla, Dil Toh Paagal Hai, Devdas, Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam, Gaja Gamini
SRK is a die-hard fan of Mads. And this reflects in every film they have been paired together!
Kareena Kapoor Khan
Films: Asoka, Ra.One, Billu
Asoka may have a commercial failure, but no one can ignore the heat generated by SRK and Kareena's love affair in the film.
Films: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Face it, Anushka had more chemistry with SRK in JTHJ than Katrina had with him (even though she was the one to break his no-kissing policy!)!
Films: Dil Se, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer Zaara, Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna
What Preity Zinta shared with SRK in Jiya Jale in Dil Se, made everyone root for her than for the film's real heroine, Manisha Koirala! Even the films came after that didn't ruin that
Films: Main Hoon Na, Dulha Mil Gaya
The pairing was unusual, so the people were really worried as to how they would look together when they came together for the first time in Main Hoon Na. But they sizzled so much together as a pair, that we craved to see them more in another film. Unfortunately, what we got was Dulha Mil Gaya.
Film: Main Hoon Na, Love Breakup Zindagi
Zayed Khan may not have the career he hoped for, but his best film and best performance happened to the one where he played SRK's lil bro!
Films: Deewana, DDLJ, Karan Arjun, Koyla, Baadshah, Pardes, etc.
The late Amrish Puri has always been a point of conflict to SRK's hero be it as Simran's strict father in DDLJ or evil antagonist in Koyla and Baadshah. But their bonding in that pigeon-feeding scene has a subtle undercurrent of respect!
Chak De Girls
Film: Chak De India
King Khan shows great team spirit here, as he lets the newcomer girls to steal the show at many points of the film. Their bonding was so strong and natural that they looked like a real hockey team.
Though this was her only film, the love story of Gayatri's Gita with SRK's Mohan Bhargava was endearing, subtle and completely natural!
Did you think any other SRK co-star should have made the above cut? Let me know...
