Ritesh Batra’s film has been nominated for the prestigious British Academy Film Awards 2015. Read on to know more!
I’m a fan of parallel cinema. Ventures from this genre make much more sense to me than the ‘masaledaar’ films which manage to make it to the 100 crore club. An example of exquisite filmmaking is Irrfan Khan and Nimart Kaur’s The Lunchbox. The film has been nominated for the British Academy Film Awards 2015 in the ‘Film Not in the English language’ category. I give you three reasons as to why it deserves to win the BAFTA:
A way to the audience’s heart is through their stomach
The Lunchbox is an epistolary love story highlighting the unique bond shared by Ila (Nimrat Kaur) and Saajan Fernandes( Irrfan Khan). Unlike coffee dates and bus rides, what brings these two together is food. A tale about an unhappy wife Ila, and a hungry working man Saajan, the plot revolves around the simple yet special camaraderie shared by the two, when Ila starts sending the lunchbox to Irrfan instead of her husband. What started out as an honest mistake, soon becomes an important part of her daily routine. The subtle manner in which the couple’s relationship was brought forth was commendable. The Lunchbox proves that exaggerated and fancy sequences aren’t needed to narrate budding romances.
The awesome threesome
When actors like Nimrat, Irrfan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are in one frame, one can only expect sheer brilliance onscreen. Along with the plot, what makes or breaks a film are the performances pulled off by the cast members. Where Nimrat perfectly essayed the role of vulnerable woman in a troubled marriage, Irrfan amazed me with his effortless act as he licked his fingers after relishing the preparation made by Ila. Nawazuddin was seen as Shaikh, Irrfan’s colleague. Though he played a supporting character, the actor’s performance was at par with the lead ones.
Keep it simple, silly
What I found the most appealing about the venture is its simplicity. The topic of extra marital affairs and troubled marriages was handled in a delicate manner. No drama, no tragedy. A sequence of touching and meaningful incidents made was all that was needed to make this venture a memorable one.
Will The Lunchbox grab the well deserved BAFTA? Let us wait and watch!
