I know what you are thinking. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was a road trip. Dil Dhadakne Do is set on a cruise ship. Both ZNMD and DDD are about rich elite upper class people. Both the films have an ensemble cast. Please spare me from these lame comparisons, as I have something more interesting to tell you about what's actually common between the two films of Zoya Akthar.
While you are eagerly waiting for the clock to strike 8, after great research (from what I have heard) I have come up with three things that are common between DDD and ZNMD:
Ranveer Singh in Hrithik Roshan's shoes
Ranveer Singh is rumoured to be playing Kabir Mehra, a son of rich businessman Kamal Mehra played by Anil Kapoor, who's dreams get buried under the expectations of his father. Ranveer is supposed to be playing a character who is caged by the circumstances and who is afraid to break free. If you look at Hrithik's character from ZNMD, it has similar shades to Ranveer's Kabir Mehra, as Hrithik's Arjun too leads a caged life where he doesn't really live but exist. While Ranveer is suppressed by the circumstances, Hrithik was suppressed by his view of life.
Anushka Sharma does a Katrina Kaif
If you remember it was the free, fun loving, live each day like your last thinking Laila played by Katrina who gives new meaning to Hrithik's life in ZNMD. From what I hear, Anushka Sharma is playing a free bird in the film who dreams big and lives life on her own terms. A little birdie tells us that Anushka becomes Ranveer's inspiration to break all chains which hold him down from living his life to the fullest. Now that's similar, aint it?
Priyanka Chopra and Abhay Deol sailing in the same boat
Abhay Deol backed out from marrying Kalki Koechlin in ZNMD, as he did not feel that he is ready for marriage. Had they got married in the film, it would have been a rough ride for both, right? DDD seems to be exploring that phase of relationship by showing the marriage of Priyanka Chopra and Rahul Bose running into troubled waters. So is Priyanka Chopra playing an Abhay Deol who had got married to Kalki in ZNMD?
With a lot of common themes between the two films, will DDD be as successful as ZNMD? Well, once the trailer is out, we would know for sure if Zoya has really revisited ZNMD as the rumours suggest.
