It can't get as real as this...
Given the fact that India has varied religions and castes, it has been ravaged by many riots. Some are chronicled, some are not. So many beliefs have given rise to stubbornness which stops one from accepting the other the way they are. We saw the devastating Gujarat riots, Mumbai riots, and others. But there is one such occurrence which has very rarely been taken up on big screen- the Hindu-Sikh riots after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.
31st October 1984, the fateful day, when Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards. It talks about that night when a Sardar family gets badly trapped in the ensuing mob violence. Vir Das who is famous for his quirky films and comic timing, has gone intense and serious in this film. Although the Sardar get up on him takes time to sink in, he looks pretty promising in it. Soha Ali Khan as his wife is very convincing as a Sikhni. It looks chilly and would definitely remind people of those dreadful days.
We all know Vir Das as a funny man who is witty and whose jokes just don’t dry up. Even in general conversation, he has the ability to crack us up. But that doesn’t mean the actor can’t get serious in front of the camera for an intense role. His upcoming film 31st October is set to change any such ideas you have about his abilities. You would also assume that for a man with a funny bone, a serious role could be a very tedious job to do but turns out it is the role of a father that stressed him out more. The actor had said that the toughest part in the film was playing a father to two little boys. It is a true story of a Sikh family who survived the riots on the night of October 31 that year. “The toughest part of my next film #31stOctober not the language or look. Playing a father to two adorable kids,” he wrote on Twitter.
