Despite the hype surrounding both the releases, here's why the box-office battle might end up in a draw
The D day is here. Tonight (December 17) reviews of Shah Rukh Khan's big ticket offering Dilwale and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Bajirao Mastani will be out. Both the films are having back to back film trials for the Mumbai media. Expect social media to go ablaze with critics and film journalists picking their favourites and commenting on the movies.
Despite the hype and hoopla surrounding the films and the trade analysis of the box office war, there is actually NO clash between the releases. Here are five reasons why:
Yes, you can watch both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani at separate times on December 18 when they release. Theatre owners and multiplexes have made their timetables in such a way that you can spend half a day watching both these films back to back. This has happened in the past when other big releases have clashed and it is NO different this time around.
Single Screen War
It seems that exhibitors have put their foot down and have refused to bow down to either of the studios who are arm twisting them into giving their film - either Dilwale or Bajirao Mastani preference over the other. This means that if one has to watch either of the films at a single screen he will have ample options. You can go to a single screen theatre like Maratha Mandir and watch both the films on the same day.
Shah Rukh - Deepika factor
Despite both the films having A list actors as their leading cast, Dilwale boasts of the epic Shah Rukh Khan- Kajol pairing with the youngsters favourites Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, Bajirao Mastani has the Queen of the box-office Deepika Padukone along with Ranveer Singh and powerhouse performer Priyanka Chopra on its credit list. This means that if I am a fan of both SRK and Deepika, I will go and watch both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani on December 18.
Rohit Shetty vs Sanjay Leela Bhansali
What is interesting is the fact that these two offerings are like chalk and cheese. They neither belong to the same genre or period. That factor will immensely work in favour of their box office collections. Had Dilwale to come out with either a comedy or an action film, there would have been serious competition. But the audience for both these films is different and so is the vision of their directors Rohit Shetty and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Both have proved their prowess at the box office in the past and their understanding of cinema is polar opposite. The variety these two releases have to offer is a blessing for cinema goers.
Neither of the films have adult content. There is no sex, nudity or graphic violence. The action scenes are a part of the storyline. This will help both the films win at the ticket window. The Bajirao action scenes in the promos have already created enormous buzz so have the car chase scenes in the Dilwale trailer. With both the films set in different timelines, one being a historical and the other a love story that time travels, it will be easy for the family audience to watch both the films on December 18.
