We break it down and tell you why you need to go watch this gem of a film
Kapoor & Sons is a story of a dysfunctional family that is struggling to come to terms with the cracks that have developed in their relationships over the years. It is a story of two brothers Rahul (Fawad) and Arjun (Sidharth) who have left their parents (Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak Shah) in their hometown of Conoor to migrate abroad and start new lives. Have they run away from family problems or are they running away from themselves ? That's a question the film addresses early on. Rishi Kapoor plays the ageing yet full of life Dadu who is the nucleus to these eccentric atoms. Rahul and Arjun return home when Dadu suffers from a heart attack and reunite with their family after years only to realise what they left behind is not the same anymore. Alia Bhatt plays Tia who has her own backstory that has relevance and purpose to where the storyline leads. The first half introduces us to these characters, giving us a glimpse into their mind and hearts, letting us in on their dark secrets and brooding insecurities while the second half paints a climax that is perhaps one of the best written in recent times.
Here are the 5 reasons why Kapoor & Sons is the ticket to buy this season!
# No Pressure
Shakun Batra doesn't succumb to any pressure or norm and takes his time to set up this fragile story. His characters are as real as it gets. He strips them off the necessity to adhere to a certain typecast and instead makes them gritty and brash giving us a voyueristic peek into their failing lives.
#On the money writing
A lot of effort has gone in the writing and that helps us connect with these characters. Most of the important scenes happen in the bedroom and living rooms of the Kapoor household giving us a feel that we are with them watching them fight, cry, hold hands and break down.
Fawad is a revelation and he catapults into a different stratosphere with this performance. A risk taker his interaction with Ratna Pathak Shah in the climax is a stand out scene. There have been films in the past that have dealt with a character coming out and embracing himself, but Shakun tops them all and sets a new benchmark in handling this sensitive subject. Fawad deserves a special mention for choosing to play a role that many mainstream actors would have shied away from.
#Sid - Alia factor
Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt bring in the charm and fun to the film, their chemistry is beyond sizzle. Alia's breakdown scene where she talks about coping with losing her parents and Sid's outburst on not being the 'perfect son' are some of the strongest scenes in the film. Rishi Kapoor brings in the chuckles while Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor shine as the husband and wife tired of living a lie.
If there's any film that connects with you on an emotional moment and pulls the strings of your heart. Kapoor & Sons is all HEART and LOVE. Shakun and the cast have put in an effort to reach out to you and connect on a level beyond the usual. That is one of the main reasons why the film works.
