Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra's Baar Baar Dekho opened across ticket windows today. The film had huge buzz thanks to the smash hit track Kaala Chasma and also due to the fact that Katrina and Sidharth haven't been paired before. Their jodi brings a certain freshness to the table and also ample excitement given the fact that they both are good looking and have huge fan following.
We saw them interact with the media, do the promotional rounds and give a dozen interviews talking about the film. All of that seemed like a build up to an exciting and interesting film. But we were wrong, oh so wrong! In fact we should have been worried from the day Sidharth started denying the fact that Baar Baar Dekho was not a time travel film! In all his interviews leading up to the release, the actor has maintained that stand. But after walking out of the theatre I realised yes he was right, cause Baar Baar Dekho is not a time travel film, it is in fact a royal mess that even a time travel expert wouldn't be able to solve.
Read our review to understand why we were hugely let down by the film. Now lets look at the 5 main reasons why Baar Baar Dekho could end up being on the top of the list of the most hyped yet disappointing films of 2016...
All that glitters is NOT gold!
Lesson learnt! Two good looking actors might make a fabulous cover for a fashion magazine, but they might not work in a time travel love story. We rooted for you Katrina and Sidharth, so much that we were hoping you would be the next big pairing of 2016. It's time Katrina took a break from working with the older men (Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Saif) and gave the younger guys a chance, similarly it was refreshing to see Sidharth romance someone other than a Shraddha or an Alia. But unfortunately all that off screen chemistry just didn't manifest on screen. Jai and Diya failed to connect with us. Their love and romance looked smashing with the lush locales, fancy clothes and bouncy tunes, but take all that away and you have two good looking people awkwardly looking at each other. Blame the writing and the lazy characters they played but Sid and Katrina deserved better.
Lost in Translation
Those who read the script, that includes a certain Aamir Khan couldn't stop raving about it. I am told how he told everyone that Baar Baar Dekho would be a ground breaking film and push boundaries in cinematic excellence. I also know of some cast and crew members who raved about Nitya Mehra saying how she would be the next big thing. If all of this was true then was the film lost in translation ? Did too many cooks spoil the broth ? Mind you the film is produced by Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. With a subject like this, there must have been several drafts of the final script, maybe what we saw on screen was totally different from the version that was on paper ?
Where is the plot ?
As I walked out of the film I heard this girl ask her mother, "Where was the story ?, all this was a dream na..", her naive and innocent question held the answer to the biggest loophole in the film - a missing plot! Critics often blame the plot or the lack of it for a miserable film, but in this case there is a plot alright, but it's as good as having no plot! You get that? The entire premise of the film is based on a dream that Sid has a day before his wedding. Wake up Sid!! Even if we surrender logic and throw reasoning out of the damned window, we are left with something that seems like a bad episode of a sci-fi romantic drama that's endlessly playing on loop.
Time Travel ka Funda
I have always found time travel as a concept to be extremely unique and worth exploring. Who doesn't want to defy time ? Why is Back to the future still a cult film ? Why do we go to tarot readers to predict our future ? But Baar Baar Dekho misses on these aspects of time travel and instead lock us up in a capsule where the storyline keeps swinging between present, past, future without any meaning or context. The portions where Sid and Katrina age and look old are quite unnecessary. We don't want to see our favourite poster heroes turn wrinkly and haggard. Even the use of technology to show the future looks gimmicky.
Award for the worst ending goes to...
Baar Baar Dekho clearly takes the cake and the cherry for the most idiotic ending. Clearly the writers must have reached a point where they decided to outdo their own foolishness. If the whole film was a dream then we just endured a two-hour plus nightmare. The only rainbow at the end of this storm is Kaala Chasma and how good does Katrina look thumping to that tune on the big screen. I wish there was more Kaala Chasma and less time travel bakwaas in the film.
