Despite being a cult classic on Friendship, I think KKHH actually distorted the concept quite a bit. Read on to know why...
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's Kuch Kuch Hota created history with it's depiction of dosti, pyaar and all that is in between. But I ask you, is Pyaar always dosti and vice versa? Can't you just be friends with the opposite sex without feeling romantically towards them. In Karan Johar's world, you can't unless you are the mother, the sister or Daaijaan.
Anyway, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai's idea of friendship was warped, at least I think so. Here are 5 things about friendship that the movie showed us which are untrue...
When you are besties, the entire college cares to patch you up
Remember the first fight Rahul and Anjali have after a game of basketball when Anjali calls Rahul a cheater? And after that the entire college goes, "Rahul aur Anjali ka jhagda ho gaya!" Firstly, who the f*ck would care about you and your BFF's fight unless they are directly involved? And secondly, why is the entire college so jobless as hell with no personal lives to worry about? That is not real life dosti man!
PG owners/ Hostel wardens/ landladies are supportive of you being friends with guys
Remember Rifat bi, Anjali's harried PG owner who was creepily interested in her tenant's love-life, telling her time and again that she is in love with Rahul? Cut to the real world (read India) where PG owners or wardens who "approve" of girls being friends with guys are a rarity. Why, you ask? Because samaaj, izzat and "log kya kahenge?" Enough said.
Pyaar dosti hai
No. Love is not friendship. The two can be mutually exclusive concepts. Friendship doesn't necessarily have to end in love. Friendship can just be what it is and there doesn't always have to be romance involved. Are we clear on that, KKHH?
Friendship is to give your BFF mixed signals the WHOLE F*CKING TIME!
There is no going around the fact the Rahul is a perfect asshole to Anjali during the film. Yes, not only does he treat her like she is androgynous and then makes statements like "Pyaar Dosti Hai" in Anjali's presence, he also conveniently switches to love from friendship when he finds out that she is "more of a woman" in the second half of the film. Rahul does a romantic dance in the rain with Anjali and follows it with a kiss on her neck and what does he do the morning after - "congratulations and celebrations" on the wedding to Aman? Seriously dude, STOP messing with her head!
Ladka aur Ladki dost nahi ho sakte
Sorry KKHH, ladka aur ladki bilkul dost ho sakte hain. No wait, let me rephrase that. Ladka aur ladki sirf dost bhi ho sakte hain. Just like how "pyaar sirf ek baar hota hai aur shaadi bhi" turned out to be a whole load of crap by the end of the film, the entire BS talk about a guy and girl not being just friends is a concept that is full of shit.
Can we now agree on the fact that KKHH did mess up the idea of friendship in our heads? Tell us what you think in the comments section below!
