Independence day seems like the right time to demand this from Bollywood fraternity!
Some things never change, much as we want them to. There is a severe lack of a original thought when it comes to promoting a film (except for Aamir Khan), or promoting an actor. The same trite lines, same old hackneyed ideas. This Independence Day, we present a list of things that we don’t want to hear from B-Town fraternity anymore...
Yeah right! Thousands of people around the world work on their birthdays. When you have limited casual leave and paid leave, people save those precious days for family vacations, weddings in the family, parent-teacher day etc. I know of people, including yours truly, working on birthdays, spouses’ birthdays, children’s birthdays and anniversaries! What’s the big deal about an actor shooting for a film or celebrating the birthday on the sets? In fact, isn’t it sweet that your colleagues and friends are making your day special. It’s a double celebration at work and at home! But no, a Shahid Kapoor working on his 34th birthday, or rather attending a workshop for his upcoming film Udta Punjab or Priyanka Chopra shooting for Bajirao Mastani on her special day is circulated as a big news. Duh!
Actors taking off on vacation
Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan have flown to their favourite place in Greece for a much-needed holiday. Deepika Padukone, who was shooting round-the-clock, went to Maldives for a much-derserved break. So, what’s new in that? Everybody needs and takes a vacation now and then to get rejuvenated and refreshed. It’s not something these actors have discovered!
How an actor has lost/gained weight
One can understand actors gaining or losing considerable weight for a film making news like Kareena Kapoor going down to size zero for Tashan or Aamir Khar gaining 22 kilos for Dangal. But a big brouhaha is made over actors gaining or losing a few kilos here and there. And when you see the film it is hardly visible. For instance, Jacqueline Fernandez claimed that she had to gain weight (around six kilos) for her role in Kick because she was playing a college student, but frankly she looked the same as she does otherwise.
Fav social cause
Actors suddenly realise that they have to do something for the less privileged. Invariably, it’s a few days before their films are up for release. A petition is filed against drunk driving (Imran Khan did it before the release of Delhi Belly), somebody lends support to the agitation against building a dam. (Aamir Khan got into the Narmada Bachao Andolan before Fanaa’s release). Somebody wakes up to the fact that they have to do something for urchins or they will simply tweet about spreading happiness. The actors claim they don’t want to talk about these things but they do reach the media — how so and so actress is sponsoring three girls or a maid’s daughter’s education (Asin and Esha Gupta in recent times). But other things they don’t want reaching the media don’t land up in the mailboxes of journalists.
Shooting despite injury/fever
Every film and trust me every film will have an instance of one of the lead actors working despite being injured or running a high temperature. “The actor just popped a few pills and continued to shoot though the doctor advised him/her to take it easy.” Recent case in point being Ajay Devgn, who we were told, continued to shoot Drishyam despite high fever. Then there’s a story of how Aditya Roy Kapur in spite of injuring his back during a dance sequence for Daawat-E-Ishq, continued to shoot despite the pain after taking painkillers ‘as he did not want the shoot to be disturbed’. Really, how many times have you heard or read this? But aren’t all working people doing it? People show up at work despite migraine and even hobble to work with a cast on the leg or arm. When there are deadlines you have no choice, but to finish your work come what may. So, let’s stop making a big deal if the star is doing something out-of-the-world!
Design on the mind
Another ploy of promoting a film is to spread news about actors designing their own clothes for the movie. Katrina Kaif designing her outfits for Jab Tak Hai Jaan was big news. Then there was buzz about how Jacqueline Fernandez was excited about desiging/wearing her own clothes in Roy. Whether they are designing their clothes or stylists are doing it, it is ultimately reflecting their personality. So, why make a big hullaballo about turning designer?
How an actor is supporting PETA
Every actor from Rakhi Sawant, Esha Gupta, Chitrangda Singh, Dia Mirza to John Abraham has supported PETA. While it’s a great thing, and some may actually be following what they preach, there are some who enjoy their fish and chicken curries on the sly. So there!
“Fawad’s popularity both within the audience and the industry comes as no surprise especially since the actor had several episodes during the Khoobsurat promotions where he was mobbed by women,” was a release sent just before the release of the film. Then there was news being circulated about how Suniel Shetty got mobbed during the promotion of Desi Kattey. Some or the other actor is always getting mobbed in Hyderabad, Secunderbad or Ahemdabad. But hello, you are talking about actors. They are bound to get mobbed for autographs and photographs. It is not breaking news. It would be if Kiran Bedi or Arnab Goswami got mobbed by crowds in a mall or a show.
