After getting decent reviews for her first Hollywood movie (Baywatch), Priyanka Chopra signed two films in Hollywood back to back - A Kid Like Jake and Isn't It Romantic? And even though she has a small role in A Kid Like Jake, she didn't mind taking it up as it has a really sweet and hardhitting message. With the Hollywood movie all set to hit the screens in America today (June 1), we can't wait to see it! However, even before release, it has the critics divided. While some loved the movie, some found it below par and stretched. While they added how the execution could have been better, they even revealed how Priyanka's role was a blink and miss, somewhat inconsequential too. That make us wonder why did she take up the film? That's a topic of discussion for later, but in the meantime, here's what the top critics across the world have to say about A Kid Like Jake.
# Dan Callahan in his review for The Wrap mentioned, "Feels more like playwriting than like screenwriting because we are told things in dialogue about Jake but barely ever get to see him behaving -- doesn't it signal the same kind of avoidance or fear that the movie itself is supposed to be about?" # Emily Yoshida wrote in the review for New York Magazine/Vulture, "This is not a film about falling apart, but all the conversations and compromises that hold things together."
# Lindsey Bahr (Associated Press) revealed in her review, "A Kid Like Jake might not be especially cinematic, but it is profound in its simplicity and truthfulness about what real fights sound like and what real lives look like."
# Amy Nicholson in her review for Variety said, "Amal (Priyanka Chopra), a charming presence slips in and out of the movie without having a compelling reason to be in it."
# Leslie Felperin mentioned in Hollywood Reporter's review that A Kid Like Jake is "Simply lovely." (ALSO READ - "Priyanka Chopra is like superwoman", Octavia Spencer is all praise for her A Kid Like Jake co-star - watch video)
# Johnny Oleksinski of New York Post, on the other hand, didn't quite like the movie or the performance by Claire and Jim, as he mentioned in his review, "Danes and Parsons are a weird pairing, who carry their TV personas with them like tote bags. Their 'Homeland' and 'Big Bang Theory' shticks don't quite click."
# Glenn Kenny of the New York Times also wrote in his review, "A Kid Like Jake is humane, compassionate and strangely detached, almost to the point of inconsequentiality."
# Meanwhile, John Anderson of Wall Street Journal felt the message given out was really intereating, as he mentioned in his review, "The well-made point is that gender assignments aren't always intelligently designed, at least not for a world built out of boxes that come only in pink or blue."
