We give you a firsthand account of the grand event that was graced by Bollywoods biggest stars
Hindi cinema has very few events round the year where the whole film fraternity joins hands and comes together for one cause. Yesterday was one such day, where all the glitterati came together and cause was none other than Dilip Kumar's biography launch. The book titled The Substance and The Shadow, has been written by veteran editor Udaya Tara Nayar.
The event, held at one of the suburban five star hotels saw Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Salim Khan, Javed Akhtar, Zeenat Aman, Danny Denzongpa, Farida Jalal, Vyjayanthimala, Subhash Ghai, Ayan Mukerji, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Priyanka Chopra, Shaan, Lalit Pandit, Riteish Deshmukh, Adesh Srivastava, Anandji, Mandira Bedi, Prem Chopra, Anu Malik, Bappi Lahiri, Javed Ali, Rajat Sharma, Tina Munim, Anil Ambani, Priya Dutt, Pt Shivkumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ayaan Ali Khan, Aditya Pancholi, Sanjay Khan, Kapil Sharma, Ali Asgar among many others.
The event, hosted by Karan Johar, saw many industry bigwigs take to the stage and share their life experiences with the thespian legend. Aamir recited a poem, penned by Prasoon Joshi, and Amitabh read a few pages from the book itself. Dilip Kumar was accompanied by his wife Saira Banu, who greeted every celebrity at the event with a big hug. She is hopeful that the book is well appreciated by audiences. Looking graceful in a green saree, she said, "Please pray that the dedication with which we have written the book, it is received by the readers in the same way. Every chapter in the book is important and you all will read something that you have not read before about him." However, Lata Mangeshkar, who was supposed to croon to some of Dilip saab's memorable songs could not attend the event due to health issues.
The audiences were also treated to an audio-video clip which showcased the various aspects of the tragedy king's life. The AV clip gathered many interviews of Dilip saab, which he gave throughout his career spanning six decades. Born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan, he entered the Hindi film industry with the 1944 film Jwar Bhata, which didn't do that well. But soon after a few stumbling blocks he found his ground and made memorable films like Mela, Naya Daur, Devdas, Madhumati, Mughal-E-Azam, Gopi, Ram Aur Shyam, Shakti, Saudagar and many more. The book chronicles the 91-year-old's life journey from his childhood days to the present. It talks about the various ups and downs in his life as well.
Dilip saab's life has been a very secretive as he didn't open up too much to the media. The book will definitely answer all the unanswered questions of his life. Just like many celebrities said in their speeches, we too were honoured to be present at the event. And as Javed Akhtar said, "We are thankful to you that you are Dilip Kumar, and we can say to generations to come that we lived in the era of Dilip Kumar." Thank you Dilip saab.
