Unlike his cousins, it took Abhay Deol a lot of time to make an entry into Bollywood. He has said that he was into academics and did not wish to quit his studies for cinema. But when he made his entry, he proved that he was one of the best talents around. Whether it was the charming criminal in Dibakar Banerjee's Oye Lucky Lucky Oye (2008) or the self-destructing Dev in Anurag Kashyap's cult film, Dev.D (2009), Abhay has proved that there are few actors in the industry who are as effortless and nuanced as he is. The actor is actively into theatre and a supporter of parallel cinema. In his free time, he devotes himself to philanthropy and social work. Abhay was last seen in Aanand L Rai's Zero (2018) and is making his debut in Tamil cinema with Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai. On his birthday, let us take a look at his five best films...
Socha Na Tha (2005)
Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia's adorable chemistry was the highlight of the film. It is considered as one of Imtiaz Ali's best films but did not get the due. He aced the role of Viren in this romantic comedy.
Manorama Six Feet Under (2007)
The film was directed by Navdeep Singh who also made the terrifying thriller, NH10. Manorama Six Feet Under was based on the successful 1974 film Chinatown made by the hit director, Roman Polanski. He played the part of this small-town detective in Rajasthan and critics loved his sharp and nuanced acting in the film.
Dev D (2009)
Abhay Deol sealed his spot in modern cinematic history with Dev D. The film changed his career and made Anurag Kashyap, a legend with movie buffs. The film was set in Punjab and he played a modern self-destructing hero with aplomb. Abhay was brilliant as was rest of the cast. His modern version of Devdas is what many millennials will identify with.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)
In the film, he played Kabir who was the organiser. Fans loved his character of an urbane sophisticated guy. The film was a critical and commercial success. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is like most of Abhay's films, a movie with no shelf live. We can watch it anytime.
Oye Lucky Lucky Oye (2008)
Critics hail this as his best work till date. He played the role of Lovinder Singh, a charming criminal to perfection. It was an effortless performance.
The actor is also a producer and works in collaboration. On the occasion of his birthday, we wish him all the success, happiness and health.
