Filmmaker Abhishek Chaubey is known for his films like Ishqiya, Udta Punjab and Son Chiriya. A month ago, there was talk going on about how he was finalised by Sajid Nadiadwala to direct the Hindi remake of the Tamil cult hit, Jigarthanda. Rumours also did the rounds that Saif Ali Khan and Rajkummar Rao were finalised for the film. BollywoodLife caught up with Abhishek Chaubey for a chat. He is one of the jury members of the India Film Project where he'll judge the 50-hour filmmaker challenge. Chaubey told us, "Yes, Sajid Bhai spoke to me about it. I am directing the film but no cast has been finalised so far. Let me get done with the writing first." Karthik Subbaraj made the Tamil film, Jigarthanda and it released in 2014. It featured Siddharth, Bobby Simha and Lakshmi Menon in lead roles. In the film, Siddharth plays an aspiring filmmaker who enters the world of Assault Sethu (Bobby Simha) to get inspiration for a film on gangsters. It was rumoured that Rajkummar would be the filmmaker and Saif Ali Khan the gangster.
Chaubey also spoke to us about the box office failure of Son Chiriya. "I try not to think too much, shake off the disappointment and move ahead. I am glad that people who saw the film loved it and have kept it alive in their discussions," he said. When we asked him if it was the date that went against it as it released amidst a packed schedule. "It is impossible to get a clean date for a film. There are so many films," he said. Set in the erstwhile badlands of Chambal, it was an action-packed dacoit drama. Stay tuned to BL for more scoops and updates!
