Sowmya Sathyanarayana, better known as Soundarya, was born on 18 July 1972. She was regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the history of Telugu cinema. Her father was a Kannada film writer and producer. Soundarya's debut movie was the Kannada film Baa Nanna Preethisu, released in 1992. She also appeared in another Kannada film, Gandharva, the same year. Her debut in Tamil cinema was with the film Ponnumani in 1993.
Soundarya did one Hindi film with Amitabh Bachchan, which was none other than the cult classic Sooryavansham. It was released in 1999 and was directed by E. V. V. Satyanarayana. The film, which spanned generations, catapulted Soundarya to fame and marked her sole Hindi film venture. By then, she was already a well-established star in South Indian cinema.
However, it was the death of Soundarya that shocked the entire country. This was a major loss for the film industry. On April 17, 2004, the actress boarded a flight from the Jakkur airstrip near Bengaluru in Karnataka. She was travelling to Andhra Pradesh for her political campaign. By then, she had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Soon after takeoff, the plane crashed and all passengers were charred to death. Soundarya was only 31 years of age.
According to reports, she was pregnant at that time and was travelling with her brother. People still remember Soundarya and her void cannot be filled; her sweet memory still remains in the hearts of her family, friends and fans.
