Diwali is upon us and like every year, we again have films clashing at the box office. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay will test their fate on October 28 and we can't wait to watch both the films. Now to be fair on both, the films have completely different premises and treatment. While Ae Dil... talks about love and pain starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shivaay is about a mountaineer's drive to protect his family. Ajay Devgn is back at the box office on his favourite festival which has given him some of the blockbusters of his career. And last time Karan Johar got his Diwali release, it was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Yes, it has been that long! Thus it's an important festival. But there are certain dynamics that come into play for Diwali and in Ae Dil.. and Shivaay's case too that applies. When we spoke to our Trade experts, Amul Mohan, Editor, Super Cinema, and Akshaye Rathi, Exhibitor-Distributor, they revealed that the day after Diwali is what sees a big jump during this festival. So in this case, it will be the first Monday for both the films which will add maximum number to their tally.
Speaking to us, Mohan said, "Friday isn't a holiday. We are in holiday spirit but still offices will be open then. Generally on Diwali, the day when the puja is held numbers aren't that big because families tend to be indoors in the second half of the day, preparing for the puja and all of that. The bump is seen in the following day, the day after Diwali. In this case, Monday will be the day when you can see a big hike in collection."
When prodded further if Monday will decide their fate more than the weekend, Mohan said, "It won't be a decisive factor but will be very big. Because the day after Diwali always sees a big bump. The last example I can think of is, Krrish 3. It opened on a Friday like this and on a Tuesday or a Monday it saw massive collection. Ra. One I can remember, the first day wasn't that much but the second day was when it really did around 20 crore back then. The added advantage these movies have is they get a proper weekend to play with and if the Monday is higher, from that point on you get a great four day total. Even if the weekend numbers are not high, I feel that the cumulative, including Monday collections, will make for a big four day total for them."
Akshaye Rathi too felt Monday will be big for both the films. "By Monday, the reports of both the film will be out and the one which has better reports, will dominate significantly from Monday. If the reports are good, I won't be surprised if they together hit a 35- 38 odd on Monday. It is the fourth day of the week. First day obviously have a different impetus. Three days have already passed before, so a lot of people have already seen the films. So people who have not seen it in last three days will watch it on the fourth day. So that's after filtering a huge audience. On a fourth day doing a figure like 35-36 cr is a big deal. Had the both film released on Monday, I would have confidently said that both together would have done 40 cr in total."
Now it will be interesting to see which movie manages to get a good weekend figure at the end of four days. Who are you rooting for? Shivaay or Ae Dil Hai Mushkil?
