Marathi author Navnath Mane says it is similar to his novel Bobhata
Sairat, the Marathi blockbuster has come trouble looming on its head. A Navi Mumbai court has ordered the Kamotha police to investigate complaints of copyright infringement filed by author Navnath Mane. This report has come in a leading tabloid. This comes six months after Sairat broke all records for a Marathi film at the ticket windows. The probe is under section 202 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) after the author filed these allegations against the makers. According to him, it is a rip-off of his novel, Bobhota. Under CrPC, the court can conduct directly inquiry or direct police to conduct investigations based on complaints. Later, summons are issued to those accused of wrongdoings. The police has to submit a report by September 30 in this case.
Advocate Abhishek Yende who is representing Mane states that the plot of Sairat is very similar to Bobhata that released in 2010. It means ruckus in English while Sairat means frenzy. The author also pointed out that Narendra Dabholkar had appreciated the novel that spoke about a couple who fought societal taboos for love. It seems renowned Marathi author DM Mirajdar had written a preface for the book. The man said his preface had motivated him to make a film on the project because Mirajdar had pointed out that the book was like the screenplay of a film. It seems Mane learnt about Sairat through friends who said they felt it was based on his book. When he saw the film he felt it was largely based on his book with some minor tweaking. The difference was in the book the hero was from a rich background while it is the girl in Sairat.
The book shows the male protagonist from a rich and upper caste background, while Sairat shows the female lead in such a background. The author has complained against the production house as well. Directed by Nagraj Manjule, Sairat made Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar overnight stars. The music by Ajay-Atul was also superhit. Sadly, there was another controversy post release. Nagraj Manjule’s ex-wife accused him of domestic violence. Stay tuned for more updates…
