A lot has been said about Akshay Kumar's win at 64th National Film Awards. The winners were announced earlier today. Social media was abuzz with trolls who were angry with the decision and argued that the likes of Manoj Bajpayee, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan etc. and on the other side there were quite a few who thought that it was a well deserved win for Akshay Kumar. And then there were the third kind, who were left confused and didn't know what to make of all the confusing development happening around them. This article is for them. So without further ado, here are three revelations made by the Jury Chairperson of 64th National Film Awards, Priyadarshan:
Akshay Kumar won the award for both Rustom as well as Airlift
Talking about the disputed category he said, "For the Best Actor category, we had four people in the final round. Akshay had two films ('Airlift' and 'Rustom'). Mohanlal had three films. Besides them, two other Bengali actors were there. Akshay and Mohanlal were the main two contenders." He also added, "Akshay has won the Best Actor award for both Airlift and Rustom. For technical reasons only Rustom is mentioned in the list of awardees. But he has given contrasting and extremely sensitive performances in both Airlift and Rustom, and we thought it was only fair to honour him for both!"
Justifying their choice of the winner, he said: "Sometimes, an actor looks impressive because of a tailor-made role. But that's not an actor. An actor is somebody who does different roles and survives for years... So considering that we found Akshay to be the suitable one."
Going solely by his statement, looks like it was more of Lifetime Achievement Award, than that for a performance. Also why weren't Aamir Khan and Manoj Bajpayee even in the contention. They, too, have done various roles and have survived for years. Also read: Jury chairperson Priyadarshan now claims Akshay Kumar won National award for both Rustom and Airlift, leaving us confused
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was in contention for Best Actress
Talking about the best actress category, which was won by actress Surabhi CM for Malayalam film Minnaminungu-The Firefly, he dropped a bomb when he said if not for Surabhi, the award would have gone to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Sarabjit. He said, "For the Best Actress Award, more than the body of work the performance was considered. Also, there weren’t many actresses who were part of a lot of films and put up great performances. Surabhi’s only competition was with Aishwarya Rai for Sarabjit. Surabhi clinched the award as she brilliantly performed her role of a non-glamourous Indian woman and carried the film on her shoulders.”
The ace filmmaker also added that this year’s jury stressed on the content and making of the movies. “Some of the films that didn’t get commercial recognition were made well and some that weren’t made well had good content. We looked at movies that had good content and were made well,” he concluded.
Well what can I say, I guess he didn't watch any of Alia Bhatt's, Radhika Apte's and Tannishtha Chatterjee's performance last year. Also read: Did you know Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's performance in Sarabjit almost won her a National Award?
Dangal 'missed' out because of better regional films
Talking about the snub that the much loved Dangal seemed to have received, Priyadarshan said: "Dangal was recalled actually. I called it back to see it again. Dangal missed out because of the powerful regional films. It's not because of anything else. Some of the Marathi and Bengali films were brilliant and better."
Well that's their opinion, I'll give it to them here.
