Recently Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha took to Twitter to announce the commencement of their first collaboration together, a film titled Ittefaq. The film is directed by Abhay Chopra and is co-produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies and BR studios. Sharing the news, Sidharth wrote, "It begins #Ittefaq @sonakshisinha directed by @abhayrchopra prod @iamsrk @karanjohar @junochopra". Sonakshi tweeted, "Embarking on a new journey today! Wish us luck @S1dharthM @karanjohar @DharmaMovies @RedChilliesEnt #ittefaq". For the uninitiated, Sidharth-Sonakshi's Ittefaq is a remake of the 1969 mystery thriller by the same name. The original film starred Rajesh Khanna and Nanda in the lead roles and was directed by Yash Chopra. It was a big box office success. Sidharth Malhotra will reprise Rajesh Khanna's role and Sonakshi Sinha will take on the role played by Nanda.
While we wait with bated breath for the release of the remake, here's all you need to know about the original Rajesh Khanna starrer:
# Ittefaq was only the fourth film in the history of Indian cinema to feature no songs at all.
# The film's plot unravels entirely over the course of one stormy night.
# Rajesh Khanna is accused of his wife's murder and is sent to a mental asylum. He escapes from the asylum and takes refuge in a lonely woman's (Nanda) house, only to find another body there. He is now accused of two murders.
# The original film Ittefaq itself was inspired by the 1964 Hollywood film, Signpost To Murder. However, Ittefaq was more appreciated by the critics and was a bigger success at the box office.
# Ittefaq was one of Rajesh Khanna's 17 consecutive hits during the years 1969 and 1971.
# Yash Chopra won a Filmfare award in the Best Director category for the film.
# This was Yash Chopra's last film for his brother's production house, BR Films. They are also one of the producers of the remake. Also read: Sidharth Malhotra begins Ittefaq with bruised hand and Sonakshi Sinha with a ring on her finger - view pic
Talking about the remake, Sidharth had explained to DNA earlier, “It’s not exactly the same. The premise will be different although the gist is the same. It is still about one night but we have modified the script. Otherwise everyone knows what it’s all about and there would be no fun. All the characters here are motivated differently.”
