Batti Gul Meter Chalu box office collections day 1: Shahid-Shraddha Kapoor's film opens on a decent note; earns Rs 6.76 crore

A good word-of-mouth should help further the film's prospects at the box office

Batti Gul Meter Chalu is not exactly a film that can be considered to be a box office pleaser. It isn't very commercial and rather talks about a social issue which might not be everyone's cup of tea. But it does feature Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor - two very marketable names and hence the film had a decent buzz before release. We had predicted that it will open to around Rs 5 crore at the box office. However, we have the day 1 collections of the film, and we must say that we are pleasantly surprised to see that the film has clocked in a decent Rs 6.76 crore at the ticket windows on day 1 of its release. However, our predictions were made when the film was to open in 1500 screens. However, the film opened on 2500 screens, which would explain the additional numbers. While Taran thinks it is a low start, what with it being a partial holiday, we think otherwise. To begin with, Batti Gul Meter Chalu doesn't have the trappings of a regular Bollywood potboiler. And hence the business registered by the film is encouraging to say the least. However, like the analyst points out, the film will have to pick up on Saturday to post a decent first weekend collection on Monday. c. BollywoodLife's reviewer, Dishya Sharma, in her 2.5 star review for the film, concluded, "The story has loopholes and is extremely slow. While Shahid tries his best to keep the batti chalu, the lights of this movie keep flickering and doesn’t give the shock it was meant to deliver. If you’re a Shahid Kapoor fan, the film is a treat. Otherwise, you could give this movie a skip."

Well, remains to be seen if the film manages to pull off a Toilet: Ek Prem Katha on us for director Shree Narayan Singh must surely be hoping to repeat the success of his last venture.
