And we were gladly surprised...
Who doesn't like surprises?! We all do. Sometimes when a few things happen unexpectedly, we get more fun out of it. Bollywood too gets stunned every years in terms of a few films' box office figures. 2015 was no different. We saw a lot of films that created history at the box office. Yet again the adage, don't judge a book by its poster, proved itself right and let us tell you how by listing out the surprise hits of 2015.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns
Box office: 152.00 cr
We will be lying if we say we had expected such numbers from this Kangana Ranaut film. We knew it would work well but it just zoomed past everyone's expectations. An actress took a film beyond the coveted 100 cr mark and added another 50 cr to the tally. We doubt if that has ever happened before and thus this film is one of the highlights of this year.
Baahubali (Hindi Dubbed version)
Box office: 118.7 cr
Baahubali's collection stayed true to its name, ROBUST. Yes, at the magnitude and scale it was mounted, electrifying figures were guaranteed but nobody could fathom the amount of money its dubbed version gained. Earning 118.7 cr in dubbed Hindi is a unheard of concept. Trade Analyst, Akshaye Rathi adds, "We always knew Baahubali would work but earning more than 100 cr in Hindi dubbed version was a real surprise. Till recently, such films had earned only 30 crore."
Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2
Box office: 64.1 cr
We can't really call its success a surprise given the fact that the original Pyaar Ka Punchnama worked really well. But what definitely is a stunner is the amount it earned. "PKP 2 was supposed to work anyway but it went far beyond its first film and that's incredible," says Rathi.
Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon
Box office: 49.38 cr
Rathi has an interesting observation here. "The industry belief about this film was when we can watch something for free on our Television sets, why would one pay for it? But audience did and the belief was proved wrong," says Akshaye. And we can't agree more. The film earned 10.15 cr on its first day, that was beyond anything anybody had imagined. In fact, we hear number of screens were increased after it got a stupendous opening weekend collection (28.81 cr).
Hate Story 3
Box office: 35.17 cr (still running)
It will be tad wrong to say we didn't expect the film to work. We did but we weren't prepared for the onslaught. In fact, Akshaye doesn't even consider it a surprise hit as the music had picked up so well. Truthfully so, despite witnessing slump on a regular basis, the film continues to earn and will only benefit with the no release this week.
Box office: 32.39 cr
Rathi feels NH 10 just scraped through. But for a film which is apparently made at a budget of 13 cr, 32.39 cr as lifetime collection is a good number. It had recovered its cost in the opening weekend itself by earning 13.30 cr. Now that's no less a feat for Anushka Sharma who turned producer with this film. This gripping to almost brutal tale whetted audience's heart.
Dum Laga Ke Haisha
Box office: 30.19 cr
The film earned only 1.12 cr on its first day but went up to earn 30.19 cr eventually. If that doesn't say anything about the merit of this film, we wonder what will. It was an unusual film which worked solely on the basis of word of mouth that got stronger every day. Bhumi Pednekar's character was so perfectly written that it can easily become the guide on 'How to get character sketch right in films'.
Box office: 30.17 cr
"Talvar worked for the niche market. The cream multiplexes saw good numbers," informs Rathi. Based on the Arushi Talwar-Hemraj double murder case, this Irrfan Khan-Konkona Sen Sharma film was nothing less than brilliant. The case has been shown in such detailing that many came out of the theatres stunned. From the screenplay to performances, nothing about the film was out of place.

Box office: 13.63 cr
Hunterrr was a unusual and bold film. To show a teenage boy's fascination for sex and his ways of nailing woman bound to make many awkward but box office said a different tale. It earned a good 13.63 cr which says a lot about the film. Guess its the content that pulled it through.
