Bhaskar Oru Rascal movie review: Critics are all praises for Arvind Swamy in this Tamil remake

The original Malayalam movie - Bhaskar The Rascal starring Nayanthara and Mammootty as the lead pair went to become a hit in Mayalalam. Following its success, the movie has been remade in Tamil. Amala Paul and Arvind Swamy are roped in for this version. The movie also stars Baby Nainika. The film was to originally hit theatres on May 18 but it has hit theatres a day in advance. So has the remake lived up to the original or is better than the original? Let's find out what the critics have to say:

Times of India consider Atvind Swamy and Amala Paul perfect for their parts - "The plot, like its original version, is interesting. The children come up with convincing performances. Arvind Swami and Amala, too, are perfect for their roles, though the former scores more than others with his histrionics. Soori, Robo Shankar and Ramesh Khanna, manage to entertain in the initial scenes, but become monotonous later.

Firstpost found the first half interesting but in the second half, it becomes too violent for a family drama - "The trouble here is Siddique still believes that the '80s commercial template will work with today’s audiences, who have long moved on. In the first half, the film is a comedy, with romance and songs thrown in; while in the second half it becomes an action-packed film with criminal gangs and a terrorist angle thrown in. The violence is a bit much for a film claiming to have family values. And the director makes the kids in the film talk like mature adults, which is hard to digest."

Arvind Swamy was the only saving grace in the film, declares Hindustan Times - "It’s quite surprising that someone even decided to remake Bhaskar The Rascal, which was never remake-worthy. The film was a surprise hit in Malayalam, but it doesn’t suit Tamil sensibilities because so many similar films have been made over the years in Kollywood. Arvind is its saving grace, and if not for him, this would be a tedious film to watch. Even as the slightly over-the-top and annoying thug, he’s entertaining at times."

Sify is of the view that the movie is interesting as far as the first half goes - The first half of the film is slightly better with some good entertainment, thanks to the cute kids and Arvind Swamy’s characterization. But post-intermission, things do not work mainly because of the over the top stunts in the climax, forced twists and needless crime angle.
