It's been 13 years since Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham-starrer Dostana released in the theatres. Yes, that along already! We all have been waiting for a sequel to the film. The makers, director-Tarun Mansukhani and producer Karan Johar wanted to give it a shot too but things didn't pan out it seems. Instead in June 2019, Karan Johar went on to announce a sequel, Dostana 2 with a completely new cast and a new story. Birthday girl Janhvi Kapoor will be seen in the much-talked-about sequel alongside dapper dude Kartik Aaryan and newcomer Lakshya whom Dharma is launching. Now, since the previous film had one female lead too, Janhvi Kapoor has been compared to Priyanka Chopra, who had been a rage as the Desi Girl and her chic saree in the song. In an interview with Indian Express, Janhvi Kapoor addressed the comparisons with the global icon, PeeCee. She said, "Priyanka Chopra was iconic in Dostana. So, there is a responsibility, but it’s another film, completely different. So, I don’t know what I can do. All that I can do [about] the bar, the standard that she has set, [is to try] reach for the stars I guess. Pray to God and hope that [I] get somewhere close." Karan Johar had opened up on depicting homosexuality in Dostana with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham. He had called it a very 'caricaturish representation of homosexuality and had said that as a maker he has taken serious efforts of representation of the sexuality in Dostana 2. "Initially, it [Dostana] was a conversation starter. But today I wouldn’t do that. The evolution is from one Dostana to the other. [It will] talk about sexuality in a way that will not make you cringe. So therein lays the [evidence] that in the last 12 years, there has been a solid change in the way we depict [queer] characters," he had said earlier. In 2016, Karan had also opened up on learning the fact that most people weren't aware of homosexuality. He had revealed that some people had thanked him for bringing it out in open. "There was once a point when we weren't even aware. People criticised me for stereotyping homosexuality in Dostana. It's ridiculous how unaware people were before. The film, at least, brought the conversation [about] homosexuality into the drawing room of every urban home."
Dostana 2 will be helmed by Collin D’Cunha who makes his debut as a director. He has also penned the script alongside Navjot Gulati, Sumit Arora and Rishabh Sharma.
