It’s no secret that late veteran actor Rishi Kapoor and his son, Ranbir Kapoor, did not share a cordial father-son relationship. And the senior Kapoor never try to hide the broken piece of this relationship. In fact, he had once confessed to the media that he had screwed his relationship with Ranbir. Kapoor's strict behaviour towards Ranbir and his constant fights with Neetu were the two reasons behind this strained relationship.
During his early days in Bollywood, Ranbir had shocked everyone when he had revealed that he was closer to his mother, Neetu Kapoor, than his father. He has said that Rishi Kapoor had modelled his relationship with him the same way the veteran actor had shared one with his father, legendary actor-Director Raj Kapoor.
"As far as my personal relationship with him goes, well, it is one of complete reverence. I am closer to my mother. I feel that Dad modelled his relationship with me on the one he shared with his own father. And it is true that I have never crossed a certain line with him. But there is no sense of loss or vacuum here. I do wish sometimes that I could be friendlier with him or even spend more time with him. Sometimes I wish I could just pick up the phone and ask him, 'Dad, how are you doing?' But we do not have that. We do not have a phone relationship. Of course, he does message me. He also takes care of the financial side of my work. So we are more connected now," read the foreword written by Ranbir Kapoor in Rishi Kapoor's autobiography, Khullam Khulla.
Rishi Kapoor was very upset when Ranbir had decided to leave his family and move in with then girlfriend Katrina Kaif. And it was this time when the former had opened up about his equation with Ranbir. He also expressed regret at not being friends with Ranbir.
"My father gave me space when I moved out after marriage and I give Ranbir his space, too, when he decided to move out and share a home with his girlfriend. In this house, he had one room: How could that be enough for a 33-year-old boy? He's a great son, he listens to me, but I don't interfere in his career because my career is mine and his is his. I know I've screwed up my relationship with Ranbir even though my wife kept telling me about what I was doing. It's now too late to change it; both of us will not be able to adjust to the change," Rishi had said in an interview with Mumbai Mirror.
He added, "I never made friends with Ranbir and though I regret it, I am also not one of those guys who would want to be on back-slapping terms with my son."
With time, the gap between father and son narrowed, and the two had gotten close to each other after Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with cancer in September 2018. By that time, Rishi had also acknowledged Ranbir's relationship with Alia Bhatt.
