Awards shows are supposed to be the events where talent and hard work is gratified. Well, at the recently held IIFA 2018 while the hard work of actors was certainly appreciated, a fan's talent was negated. And today it has been discarded. A tribute video to late actress Sridevi turned out to be plagiarised from a fan-made video by Saba Arif for her YouTube channel. All she wanted in return was acknowledgement. Internet was hysterical upon learning this. But seems like the event organisers and Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor are in no mood to give the person her due credit. In fact, Boney has responded to Saba's claim saying she owns no right to use the videos.
While talking to a news daily, Boney said, “Almost all of the clips in the video are owned by me or Yash Raj Films, thus, giving us the right to use them as we like. The video was approved by me for IIFA, after a discussion with YRF, and I’d like to know what gives her (Saba Arif) the right to claim it as her own. If she has a problem with the video, she should reach out to me rather than just make such accusations.”
The popular producer seems to be misplacing his anger. Hypothetically, even if he had hired an editor to assemble an entirely original tribute video made out clips he owns the rights to, the efforts of the editor who put it together should not be overlooked. And that is all the point that Saba is trying to make.
Just to drive the point a little closer to home, I'd like to quote Karan Johar. The co-producer of Dhadak said at the success press-conference of the film, "It is a fan boy's homage to Sairat. If making Dhadak is wrong, then so is every fan in the world for every piece of art. We are all fans. We paid a homage,"
Upon learning about what Boney has said, Saba has said, “Sure, the clips are his to own. But I put my heart and soul into this video — it took me three days to make it. They didn’t change the sequences of the clips or the song(s), and the fact that I had put all that together makes the concept my intellectual property. This was never about the same clips being used, but about my hard work being taken for such a show without any acknowledgement. It is still my video, and I’d like to be acknowledged for the same. I’m just surprised by this reaction to my post.”
