Yet another month is over and here we are trying to make sense of what the box office taught Bollywood in the month of April. Let us start off by telling you, it was nothing short of a revelation. While on one side, Varun Dhawan proved that he is a bonafide actor and not just a commercial hit machine with October, there was also Avengers: Infinity War that made Bollywood give up on an extended weekend. The latter was the most talked about phenomena of the month. As if the pre-release buzz around the film wasn't enough, the amount of news it is creating after its release has to be seen to be believed. It has demolished many new and old Hindi movies in its wake. Here's a quick recap of how Avengers: Infinity War destroyed Bollywood.
It is only fair to begin this section with Avengers: Infinity War. Everyone knew that the film will work wonders in India but nobody could predict the storm. The pace at which the film is doing business at the box office is unheard of for any Hollywood film in India. In fact, it has already made Rs 94.3 crore in the first three days and will hit the Rs 100 crore mark today. It's the fastest Hollywood film to have crossed that mark. That's not it. Every film that released this year seems pale in its comparison. Imagine a Hollywood film has the highest opening day record to itself in a country which boasts of housing the largest cinema industry in the world. It should be a wake-up call! Amusingly, Bollywood stayed far away from taking on the might of the superheroes at the box office as it gave up on an extended weekend. Producers usually look for such opportune moment to release their movies and yet.... it was just the anticipation of a storm called Avengers.
But we shouldn't forget what October did. It's unlike any film that Varun Dhawan has done before. Badlapur, atleast, had commercial elements in the form of comedy by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and a Jee kar da number. October was devoid of any such shenanigans. Varun was fresh out of the success of Judwaa 2 - a complete entertainer, and yet audience applauded the film. It obviously didn't clock big numbers but it was surely impressive to see movies like October getting its due at the box office. Also, Varun deserves credit for attempting something like this despite knowing that a majority of his fans would not be too kicked about it. Talk about taking risks at such an early stage in your career!
All other releases were utter failures. Irrfan Khan is ill but his film Blackmail did release at the box office. Unfortunately, it couldn't entice the audience. Less we talk about the rest is better!
Undoubtedly, the superheroes. They promised mind-boggling stuff in the film and they delivered just that. When you hear people whistling in the theatres upon the entry of Iron Man and Captain America, you know what Avengers: Infinity War means to Indians. It is still earning money and might just become the first Hollywood film to cross the Rs 200 crore mark in India alone.
Varun Dhawan obviously makes you believe in him more and more. He was the one who bailed Bollywood out last year with Judwaa 2 when the likes of Salman and Shah Rukh Khan's films were failing. And despite knowing what his fans want from him, he decided to experiment. Kudos to him for making such daring choices in his career... not everyone will do that. (Also read: LEAKED! The biggest observation we made this month was that Hollywood can engulf Bollywood if it desires to do so... Content will definitely be the king and nothing else.
May won't really spin biggies your way but there are quite a few films that we are desperate to watch. One is Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal's Raazi. Apart from the premise, the fresh casting of two powerhouses of talent has made us excited about the film. Then there's Deadpool 2 which is expected to do tremendous business at the box office. It may not be as gigantic as Avengers: Infinity War but the merc mouth has his fans.
