And this is certainly a huge relief for the filmmakers. Read on to know more...
Bringing much needed respite to filmmakers, the directive by Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani to ban 34 cuss words from the films has been stalled by the Information & Broadcasting Ministry. National Award winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, who is gearing up for his next release Calendar Girls tweeted, "Welcome decision by I&B Ministry to stall Censor Board Word List.Comes as a big RELIEF, given the genre of my upcoming film #CalendarGirls!,"
Nihalani had recently issued directions that films with double meaning words, profanities (34 were listed out), those glorifying bloodshed or violence against women would not get certification. The order, sent to all regional officers, was met with uproar by filmmakers and board members themselves who said they had not been consulted.
Legally, the Board has powers to recommend change in rules or law. But the recommendations must be put before the ministry. This was not done. Neither the Board members nor the ministry was kept in the loop.
Noted filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Vishal Bhardwaj and Mukesh Bhatt met minister of state for I&B Rajyavardhan Rathore recently and it is only after this meeting that the ministry made its disapproval clear to Nihalani and noted that such orders could not be issued unilaterally.
This is certainly a huge relief for the filmmakers, who surely would be elated with ministry's decision.
