Budhia who was once recognised, is now a long forgotten name
Starring Manoj Bajpayee and Mayur Patole in the lead roles, Budhia Singh- Born To Run is a biopic on India's youngest marathon runner Budhia Singh. For all those who don't know, Budhia, India's forgotten hero, created history when he ran a marathon from Bhubaneswar to Puri. He was only five years old yet he managed to cover 65 km in seven hours and two minutes. His record-breaking act got him listed in the Limca book of records and he was termed as the world’s youngest marathon runner way back in 2006. Director Soumendra Padhi weaves an interesting tale as he showcases how Budhia, who was once recognised in every street, book and corner of Odissha is now a long-forgotten name.
What's it about:
The film is about Manoj Bajpayee plays Biranchi Das who runs a Judo school for orphans in Odissha. He brings Budhia to the school for training but soon realises that Budhia can run as long as he can! The boy just doesn't seem to get tired! He recognises Budhia's talent and decides to let the world know of his ability. He wants him to be India's first ever marathon runner and ensures that he personally trains him.Budhia soon becomes famous not only in his locality but the entire state now knows him as The Marathon Boy. Biranchi wishes to see him run in Olympics and win a gold medal. But Budhia's fame, popularity, glory and Biranchi's dream of seeing him run for Olympics, are both short-lived.
Manoj Bajpayee fits the bill perfectly as Biranchi Das. He is very adamant and obsessive. He fights against the government, child welfare commission, and the political system, till the end. The story is simple and raw. The first half is interesting enough to keep you hooked to the screen but it's dragged a little too much in the second half.
Manoj Bajpayee and Mayur Patole's relationship in the film goes beyond the instructor-student tag. They are more like the father-son duo. The kid, very effortlessly pulls off dialogues making it look natural on-screen
The film is no different from any Bollywood sports film. Although there are certain emotional, heartbreaking scenes, the film is clichéd. The film gets a little too melodramatic.
The plot is very basic. It isn't a perfect film. Budhia Singh-Born To Run is an emotional film that highlights the story of a young boy whose story has been long forgotten. It is a story that deserves to be told!
