It's that time of the year when the trailer for one of the biggest and most ambitious films of the year - Shankar's epic magnum opus 2.0 will finally drop and quench the thirst of hungry fans who have been waiting for this moment. The buildup is huge and why wouldn't it be? The expectations from fans and the industry are sky high! We can't think of a recent film whose trailer has been so highly anticipated. Let's just take a minute to name drop the talent associated with this project - superstar extraordinaire Rajinikanth, action King - Akshay Kumar, visionary director Shankar and also the genius marketing master and producer, Karan Johar, along with music by the maestro, AR Rahman. These names, all taken in a single breath, are ample reasons to be excited and begin the countdown with a bated breath!
However these won't be the first visuals of the film that we will see. A short teaser of 2.0 released a while ago and while the response wasn't exactly what fans expected, it got everyone talking! Before we witness the big event on screen, here are 5 boxes that I hope 2.0 checks and delivers with ease...
Special effects wizardry
Let's get real. This is 2018 and we are living in a time where kids have mobile games with visual expertise and thrills that are beyond belief. There is also maximum exposure to the West and Hollywood films and TV shows that are breaking new ground and setting new benchmarks in terms of the direction VFX should take. We aren't just talking about the Avengers franchise or Game of Thrones, we are talking about the overall technical superiority going several notches up in the entertainment world over the last few years. From what the teaser showed us, there is no doubt in my mind that Shankar and his VFX team have gone all out to blow our minds in terms of the visuals. The epic bird scene or the multiple Chitti clones firing away will surely drive the audience crazy. But we do hope that the makers have taken note of competition and ensured their fireworks are worth our moolah.
All that glitters better be good
Now that they have taken our expectations so high, we hope that Shankar has also spent as much time on the script and writing as he has on the VFX. Trust me, without a good narrative and a riveting storyline there won't be much to applaud. All that dazzle and thrill needs to have a solid plotline to back up and support. The teaser did drop several hints on where this story is going and we believe that the fight of man vs mobile is definitely worth exploring. More power to the writers who, I hope, have gone all out to make maximum use of their talent in the film.
All hail Thalaiva and his glory, but even hardcore fans have been a bit wary of his recent film choices and their box office performance have been a testament to their feelings. Shankar knows Rajinikanth's strengths and there is no denying his super intergalactic stardom, but we hope that there is more to his performance than the signature swag moments and dialogues. Having said that, Rajinikanth is definitely back in familiar territory and he can do with a blockbuster to reinstate his superstardom status that might have got a slight dent.
Akshay's biggest risk
If there is anyone who will benefit the most from 2.0 and its performance, it has to be Akshay Kumar. This is easily his most ambitious career defining moment. To play an antagonist to Rajinikanth is no child's play. I loved how crazy he has gone with his look and in my last meet with Akshay, there was that excitement in his eyes the minute I changed the subject to this film. He started rubbing his hands with a child-like thrill, telling me, "You have no idea what you are in for!" This was months before we got to see the teaser or his menacing crow monster look. I am rooting for Akshay and hoping that he not only delivers but takes his own stardom into a different space, several notches high than the existing one!
The definitive moment for 2.0 is definitely going to be that huge climax. I am told that Shankar was working on several different versions of how the end should be and even the actors were kept in the dark on how the plot would tie up these heavy loops. I can imagine the audience walking out of the theatre going, "Yaar, what was that climax" or "Omg, I can't get that out of my head." The scale of 2.0 is so freaking huge that the climax is going to be everything! Think 10 times of anything you have ever seen in terms of visuals in an Indian film.
What are your expectations from the 2.0 trailer ? We would love to hear from you guys.
