2017 has been a dull year in terms of box office business for Bollywood. Movies have failed miserably at the ticket window, proving year after year that it is only content that sells and people want to spend only when a movie excites them. Despite having big releases like Shah Rukh Khan's Jab Harry Met Sejal and Salman Khan's Tubelight, box office went through a lull, which kind of surprised many. However, things changed when Varun Dhawan's Judwaa 2 released. The movie raked in big numbers and has become the highest grosser of 2017. Worldwide, Judwaa 2 has grossed more than INR 200 crore, bringing in some much needed respite for the industry. Similar was the case even with Aamir Khan's Secret Superstar and Ajay Devgn-Parineeti Chopra's Golmaal Again that released a week back. The two movies which are highly awaited right now are Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor starrer Padmavati and Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai that are scheduled to release this December.
Padmavati created a storm in the industry and amongst the audience with the release of its first trailer. Audience couldn't stop going gaga over the stellar performances, its grandeur, background score, set design, costumes and just about everything. The first trailer shut all the negativity that was doing the rounds around the movie including the delay in its release. If the word in the trade is to be believed, then Padmavati is being made at a whopping budget of INR 150-170 crore and going by the trend, the movie is sure to open big on its release. Two weeks after Padmavati, comes Salman Khan's Tiger Zinda Hai which is sure to create fireworks at the box office. The movie releases on December 22, 2017 and is being eagerly awaited. Initial figures suggest that TZH is being made at a budget of INR 100-120 crore and with Salman and Katrina reuniting on the big screen, the film will record massive numbers on its release. According to trade sources, opening day for Tiger Zinda Hai looks somewhere around INR 22-25 crore as of now. This figure may vary as we inch nearer to the release.
Informs a trade source, "Industry has high hopes from both Padmavati and Tiger Zinda Hai. Both the films are being made at a budget above 100 crore. While Padmavati is reportedly in the range of INR 140-150 crore, Tiger Zinda Hai as per initial trend looks somewhere between INR 100-120 crore. Needless to say, these movies will rake in the much needed moolah at the box office, ending the year on an excellent note. Whatever be the case with the other films of 2017, these two movies will end the year with a bang. All in all, December looks very positive."
Adds another source, "December has always been amazing every year with the best of films being reserved for the last. And though Padmavati and Tiger Zinda Hai are up for a release and they would indeed be the biggest films of 2017, that isn't going to reflect in 2018. But these films along with Judwaa 2, and hopefully Secret Superstar and Golmaal Again will definitely bring some hope for Bollywood in this low phase."
Padmavati, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, releases on December 1, 2017 whereas Tiger Zinda Hai is being helmed by Ali Abbas Zafar and hits the screens on December 22, 2017.
