It's been almost one and a half year since we last saw Deepika Padukone on the silver screen. The actress' last offering was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat with Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. Ever since people have been waiting for DP's new movie and they were elated when the actress signed Meghna Gulzar's Chhapaak. Say for that matter, when Deepika's first look from the film was unveiled, people couldn't get enough of the striking similarity between the actress and acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Soon after the first look was released, Deepika began the shoot with her leading man, Vikrant Massey.
And in just 43 days, Team Chhapaak has wrapped up the shoot. Surprising, isn't it? On the last day of the film, director Meghna Gulzar couldn't hold back her tears and broke down on the sets. She shared adorable images with her leading actors - DP and Vikrant on Instagram with a caption that read, "And we wrapped #Chhapaak Malti... Amol... I will carry you with me. ? Thank you for your faith and for pouring yourself into our film!"
It was pretty evident from Meghna's social media post that the film is very close to her heart and so are the characters. In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Meghna spoke about the same and said, "There is Malti, and then there is Deepika who became Malti. Malti's presence on screen reflects the expression in Deepika's eyes and on her face which comes through the prosthetics. For me, Malti is Deepika and Deepika is Malti."
Earlier at an event held in Chennai, when Meghna was asked about casting DP for the lead role in Chhapaak, she had said, "You won't be seeing Deepika, you know. You will be seeing a disfigured Deepika. There is an uncanny similarity between the survivor and Deepika." She adding that the film will show people the havoc that violence can wreak in a person's life.
Jointly produced by Meghna, Deepika and Fox Star Studios, Chhapaak, based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, releases on January 10, 2020. It will clash with Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan's Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior at the box office.
