Ever since the trailer of Sushant Singh Rajput’s Detective Byomkesh Bakshy has hit our screens, I can’t wait to watch it! Where the dark, intense and serious plot of the film captivated many through the trailer, the first soundtrack is completely opposite in impact. Jazzy, groovy and upbeat, Calcutta Kiss will instantly lift up spirits of those feeling blue.
If the audio track had left you grooving, the video would make you wanna leave everything and just dance. The song has been sung by Imaad Shah and Saba Anand and performing the cabaret as beautifully as could be is Lauren Gottlieb. Apart from the positive feel which this number possesses, what I like is the fusion of jazz and dub step beats it has. The soundtrack is mixed well and has a flow of an appealing tune and melody.
The lyrics, however, could have been better and hard hitting in my opinion. I was slightly put off by the repeated usage of the phrase “Do you know what time it is?”
The number, on the whole, perfectly complements the era being showcased in the film. As we all know, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a detective thriller portraying the pre-independence years (1943) in Kolkata. As soon as I heard Calcutta kiss, it took me back to an era gone by which I believe was the point of the track in the first place.
