Finally the nominations of 89th Academy Awards, popularly known as The Oscars, are here. Before we go further with the list there is something that stood out in the nominations and that is the acting nominations received by Dev Patel. For his film Lion. Before Dev Patel the only two actors of Indian descent to be nominated in the acting category are Ben Kingsley first time for Gandhi in 1982 for which he won and then other three nominations in 1991, 2000 and 2003. Before him it was Merle Oberon (an anglo Indian actress) way back in 1935. While both of them are anglo Indians, Dev Patel is not. Having said that, there was strong buzz for Sunny Pawar as well for Lion but he got the royal snub. Also this time, contrary to the previous time Oscars is NOT all white. With nominations of Dev Patel, Mahershala Ali, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Denzel Washington, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Ruth Negga. So that's a welcome change.
