Dil Juunglee is about the daughter of an Anglo-Indian business magnate who falls in love with a middle class aspiring actor from Delhi's Lajpatnagar. Due to parental opposition, they decide to elope but do not have a happily ever after. After a few years, they meet and reconnect. Will they give their failed love story a second shot? What happens next is the crux of this rather predictable love story.
The biggest highlight of the film is Taapsee Pannu's performance as the dreamy and nervous Koroli who changes into a go-getter businesswoman. The film is narrated through her eyes. The chemistry between Saqib Saleem and her is good. Saqib holds the fort as an aspiring Delhi guy, but he is better as the Bollywood star slogging it out to climb the ladder of success. Supriya Shukla is wonderful as his mom. Santosh Barmola, as Jai, is effortless in his small role. The music of the film is pleasant to the ears. Songs like Bandeya, Nadaaniyaan flow with the mood of the film. It is a gorgeous looking film and London is presented beautifully as a city for lovers. One thing you want in a love story, however frothy it is, is some soul. The writing of the film falls flat as you do not sympathise with the actors for the most part. In fact, the writing in the first half is rather juvenile. You cannot imagine any girl to be so distanced from reality. It picks up in the second half but the climax is again damn predictable. There are scenes that had the potential to move you but they do not evoke much emotions. While the premise of a second chance in love and an imperfect lover is refreshing, some of the side characters are too caricaturish like the gay model coordinator. However, it never gets jarring due to the breezy feel of the film.
What to do?
Dil Juunglee lacks the intensity, which could make it rise above the mundane. The actors are in good form but that is about it. If you want to kill time and see some gorgeous visuals of London, the film should suffice.
