DVD of the week - Whiplash

An autobiographical story of a young man who wishes to achieve great things in his career and his teacher who is the Devil personified, sounds like an interesting one! But is the DVD worth a buy? Read on to find out!

What's it about: Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller) is an ambitious young jazz drummer who wishes to be "one of the greats." While his admission to the elite music conservatory, Shaffer in New York seems like a dream come true, HELL awaits him in the music room. Shaffer conservatory's instructor Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons) is an unrelenting, manipulative, ruthless man who pushes the young man right to the edge, and then over to the other side. Under his tutelage, Andrew puts excessive pressure on himself physically as well as mentally, which even costs him a budding relationship with a girl he really likes. But does his potential flourish under Fletcher's harsh and gruelling teaching methods or does he lose sanity? You will have to watch the movie to find out!

What's in the DVD: Whiplash was actually supposed to be just a short film by Chazelle about his autobiographical experiences as a jazz music student. It opened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. But after it was received with a roaring response, Chazelle developed the screenplay to work as a feature film which opened an year later at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and even won the Grand Jury Prize Audience award there. JK Simmons went on to win an Oscar for his performance. Apart from the main feature film, you will find the short film Whiplash was made on in the DVD, which stars JK Simmons and Johnny Simmons. Another special feature is Damien, JK Simmons and Miles talking about the movie at the Toronto Film Festival. The theatrical trailer of the film is also one of the special features in the DVD.

Why to watch: While the DVD doesn't have much to offer as far as special features go, but the film in itself simply cannot be afforded to be missed. Even the short on which the film is based is astounding to watch. Each actor has given top drawer performances which makes the DVD a valuable addition to your collection!
