While the daily soaps get all the TRPs, there is a segment of the audience that is appreciating different kind of stories on TV. The super success of Beyhadh on Indian TV especially amongst online viewers has motivated producers to explore thrillers cum dark love stories on the small screen. While Beyhadh did not get huge TRPs on TV, Arjun Bijlani and Aalisha Panwar's Ishq Main Marjawan is getting decent TRPs of 1.5 in the evening slot. After Beyhadh, Sony is ready with two more thrillers, Haasil and Ek Deewaana Tha. Let us take a look at why thrillers are the rage all of a sudden...
Bored of saas bahu sagas
The new content on TV is proof that people are bored of saas bahu sagas. Of course, the large segment still watches that, but the younger audience is appreciating new content. Moreover, the spread of Indian TV is now far and wide. With rapid urbanisation, people are failing to connect with sagas of joint families and kitchen politics. The daily soaps in family drama space that are faring well, like Yeh Rishta and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein are also quite contemporary in approach. Shows like Ishqbaaz, Rishton Ka Chakravyuh, Savitri Devi have a following in foreign countries where saas bahu sagas don't earn much appreciation. This is one reason why thrillers are finding favour.
With channels quickly pulling off the plug from non-performing shows, producers are veering towards finite concepts. It is also because of the fact that people are impatient and hate makers who stretch tracks unnecessarily. The thrillers being written now are all finite stories, which make it exciting for the entire team. A finite show has certain quality control, which is also a must. Young people who are exposed to the web and foreign shows want everything on a grand scale right from the costumes to technology used. Beyhadh set a standard in production quality and new shows like Ishq Main Marjawan also have a distinct visual appeal.
There is no doubt that TV is getting bolder by the day. Even daily soaps go all out with romance. Shows like Ishqbaaz, YRKHH, Naamkarann and others do not hesitate from showing steamy chemistry between the leads. There is a lot of potential to show intense romance in a thriller unlike a family show. The presentation can be a lot more glamorous if needed.
All said and done, the freshness that thrillers are bringing on Indian TV is a welcome change. Stay tuned to BL for more scoop and updates...
