The Zee TV show is touted as the big come back of Drashti Dhami post her wedding and believe me when I say this that most people are watching the show mainly for her
Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani has been in the talk of the town when the first promo hit the television screens - for Drashti Dhami, for its vintage feel and for Siddhant Karnick and the lead actress’ chemistry. We are definitely not disappointed with the little we saw and the first episode has only raised our expectations from the show.
The story of Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani is a love story set in 1945 between a King and a commoner’s daughter, who then goes on to become his queen. Drashti Dhami plays the role of Gayatri daughter of a rich money lender. While she is considered an insignificant part of her own family, Rana Indravadhan Singh Deo (Siddhant Karnick) decides to marry her for political gains. Initially he is unable to give her the position of his wife as he is still in love with his first wife, who died while he was away at waging wars in Wold War 2. The story revolves around how he falls in love with Gayatri and how she helps him become the most loved couple of the kingdom.
Goes without saying that it great to see Drashti Dhami back on the small screen doing what she does best – acting. As Gayatri, Drashti gets into the skin and the emotions of the character brilliants. She picks the emotions, excitement and nuances of a girl in awe of her King perfectly. Coming back from the war, Indravadhan suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), luckily for us Siddhant is neither over the top nor is he too inexpressive. Anita Raaj steals the show with her poise, style and experienced performance. Loved her hair styles in the show, especially the one she dons in the second half of the episode. Everything from the vintage cars, to the decor of the palace, chandeliers, powder rooms, furniture and clothes were designed beautifully and keeping in check with the era.
Akshay Anand’s get up looks completely fake and unreal. The library that Gayatri is obsessed about looking like a make shift one in a class room. With so much of focus on Drashti Dhami, it seems like she will take a lot of away from the actual story. Frankly, there is very little to criticise about, ‘coz there’s very little you can judge from watching the first episode. The show starts off on a dramatic not, maybe they should have at least waited for second episode to bring in the drama of the blast and attempted murder.
All in all the show looks promising and is definitely worth a watch. Drashti Dhami’s splendour performance and Siddhant’s intensity can take the show to great heights. It’s a good competition at the 9:30 pm slot as long as they don’t get carried away with the plot and make it something very typical.
