The show started with great promise but we doubt it will click with the audience
We’ve been impatiently waiting to see Ashutosh Gowariker create magic on the small screen ever since he announced his TV show. The concept of a girl climbing Mount Everest brought about this unexplained feeling of victory that cannot be expressed in words.
When we spoke to Ashutosh about the show and the concept, he clearly said that in order to tap into the television viewing audience, his central character had to be a female. Well we understand that concept. He then wowed us by telling that his entire cast and crew actually climbed 12000 ft and shot in the most difficult of terrains.
Like you already know, Everest is the story of an ordinary girl, Anjali Singh Rawat (Shamata Anchan), trying to do something extra ordinary. And she does this so that her father, Brigadier Jagath Singh Rawat (Manish Chaudhary), can approve of her and talk of her with pride. She overhears her father talk about his misfortune of having a daughter instead of a son who would have made him proud by joining the army. Heartbroken but with a new determination Anjali promises to do something that will make her father proud. On a parallel track, there’s another story of a journalist – Akash Joshi (Rohan Gandotra)- who lost his friend in a freak accident on an assignment. Ramesh Roongta (Rajat Kapoor) is a business tycoon who wants to sponsor the famous mountaineer Arjun Sabharwal and his next peak – Everest. Ramesh wants Akash to cover Arjun's achievement and make a documentary.
The starting sequence when Anjali is at the edge of the cliff and is trying to cross the gap between two mountains is spectacular. To see her shakily trying to cross the gap and then lose her balance and fall gives you the chills. It starts off at the highest point and by now you are waiting to see what happens next. Manish Chaudhary plays the chauvinistic army officer to the T. Capturing the essence of Mumbai and Jaipur whenever the story shifted was done well.
The storyline seems more forced than natural. It’s about Anjali who want to make her father proud- someone who hates her. Well if he hates your existence then why should something you do change his mind? Frankly, wethinks the idea of using the girl child angle is redundant. The story of the journalist losing his friend also was very abrupt. Which reporter directly approaches the criminal in a hostage situation anyway? There’s a big gap between Ashutosh’s story and the reality. Coming to the performance, it may take time for the actors to grow on you. However, going by first impressions, maybe Shamata Anchan should have got more lessons in acting than in mountain climbing. We believe the show will pick up only when the trek actually starts. The show will be more crisp and engaging. At the moment, we were struggling to stay awake while watching the show.
Frankly, with all the hype around the show, we were expecting great things, but this one was a major disappointment. Maybe you should consider watching the show when she actually starts her trek to the Everest. Giving them the benefit of doubt, we really hope the storyline gets interesting and acting gets better after a couple of episodes.
