Bollywood has given us chartbuster songs that we will cherish for life. It is safe to say that without music, a Hindi commercial movie is incomplete. And in the last few years, Bollywood is borrowing from old classics, adding a new twist to it and recreating iconic tracks. While a few recreations have turned out to be really good, the rest, if we can say, have left a bitter taste.
On the occasion of International Music Day, we got in touch with popular Bollywood singers and asked them to share their sentiment about remixes. And here's what they had to say...
Remakes are giving the young generation an opportunity to identify with the classics of earlier eras, in a way that makes the music relatable to them. That's why I do covers. I pay tribute to my favourites. That being said, I would love to see more original music in Bollywood films. I don't believe Bollywood should waste the resources they have on remixes.
Recreation shouldn't just be picking up a tune or a hook line from an old song. For me, recreation is rendition, it has to be a whole new song altogether. As long as you retain the soul of an old track, recreations are good. You can't call it a remake by just changing the sound. Everyone has a different take. Tomorrow, I may come up with one, with my own touch.
I would like to tell my fans that they should enjoy good music, support a good artist and do whatever their heart feels is right.
Frankly speaking, I am incapable of doing a recreation. It is one of the skill sets that I lack. I don't mind recreations but the problem is if you aren't good at it, you better not do it. Personally, I believe in creating different music so that people can enjoy.
Remixes just take away the soul of a song. And why stick to remixes when there’s scope to create new, beautiful music?
Nothing beats an original song. Only if the recreation doesn't do away with the soul of the original one, it's a win-win situation for both, the makers and the audience.
