Filmmaker Anu Menon's upcoming biopic on Indian writer and human calculator Shakuntala Devi has been one of the most exciting projects to have been announced in recent times. The movie stars Vidya Balan in the lead. The actress will play the legendary mathematics wizard, who is popularly known as 'human computer'. While the biopic is currently in the pre-production stage, the team is currently finalising the other cast members of the movie. And the makers have found Shakuntala's husband for the biopic. BollywoodLife's reliable source confirmed that Jisshu Sengupta, who is a popular name in the Bengali cinema, has been signed for the movie.
"Jisshu will play Shakuntala's husband Paritosh Banerji. Since Banerji hailed from Kolkata originally, the makers found Jisshu perfect to play the part to the T. His character is one of the most integral parts in the narrative," a little birdie close to the development revealed. The actor has signed the papers and will soon kickstart the shooting. This won't be the first time when Jisshu and Vidya Balan who play husband and wife on-screen, will share the screen space together. Earlier the two were seen in the NTR biopic, wherein Jisshu had a cameo.
We called up Jisshu, who is currently filming Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt-starrer Sadak 2, and dropped him a text as well, but didn't get a revert from him so far. Jisshu has been a part of several Hindi movies and was last seen playing Maharaja Gangadhar Rao in the Rani Lakshmi Bai's biopic Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, that released earlier this year. In the movie he played Kangana Ranaut's on-screen husband.
Coming back to the movie, Paritosh, who was an IAS officer from Kolkata, and Shakuntala were married in the mid-1960s when Devi returned to India from London. They got separated in 1979.
While talking about playing the character, Vidya Balan in a statement said, "I am extremely excited to play the human computer, Shakuntala Devi, on the big screen. She was truly someone who embraced her individuality, had a strong feminist voice and braved many a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success. But what truly fascinates me is that you wouldn’t normally associate a fun person with Math…and she completely turns that perception on its head."
The movie slated to release in Summer 2020.
